Recently found out that one of my co-workers makes more than me even though I’ve been with the company longer than he has. What is the best way for me to renegotiate my salary with my supervisors and manager?

This usually happens if someone’s coming from outside the company - if you stay with a firm too long you’ll always be paid less than the newcomers….best way to increase your salary is to keep moving around.

I agree with this. But I also think you should watch up for a higher pension rate and/or vacation days that add up when you are with a company for a longer time. That needs to be considered.

Find a new job (that pays you what you want) and be willing to leave. Then go and negotiate with offer letter in hand

He will lose trust with management if he does so. They will view him as someone who can leave any time. Probably won’t get good projects, won’t be taken care of, etc. Op, you’re better off finding another job that pays high and moving there

I would apply for other jobs. I think that's happening a lot of places. Companies need people and pay them more to lure them in, but don't increase the pay of current employees.

Up or out. In your case, it’s clear you need to leave v

He might be better than you… who cares how long you have worked here

If you’re both doing the same job and it requires the same skills/experience, you should ask your boss. If you have strong arguments, ask to be matched at that pay. That conversation feels like a DTR. Based on that conversation, you can decide whether to stay or start looking elsewhere. This happened to me and I asked to be matched at $4K more. Boss said no, so I then responded to recruiters and landed a job paying $22K more. Understand your coworker may have had this discussion with their previous employer, and from there decided to look for other opportunities that would pay more. Before leaving, yes you should check for any vesting you may lose from pension or profit sharing; you’ll have to evaluate whether the gains of a new opportunity outweigh the loss from leaving your job. As to vacation, I know soooo many people at my old job who wouldn’t leave just for that reason. Tenured employees are very likely to get more PTO if they ask for it once they receive an offer. Most employers know their PTO package is not competitive when recruiting an employee with tenure (5 years or longer). I know because I had this situation too. I asked, got my PTO matched along with the 22K pay bump!

How did you find out? How do I know if my coworkers are making more?
