I have similar TC and recently turned down a 150k pay rise in another firm. Having said that, I am not in a cushy relax role right now and frequently have to work close to 60hrs a week (not a lot for consulting but quite a bit for industry). I turned down the offer because 1. I like what I am doing 2. I believe what I am doing now will help my career trajectory more than the other offer over the longer term 3. Whilst the 150k pay rise is great, I am earning enough for now (obviously I would love more). The raise isn't enough for me to give up what I am doing especially when I dont consider the other role as superior to what I have except money.

P2 I run the group strategy function and the innovation function for a bank. Group strategy function is pretty similar to what management consulting does and my team basically works on projects from the Board, Executive team or special projects from me. On innovation front, the team largely covers a few types of work - keeping abreast on all the dwvelopments in the domestic and global markets and adjacencies -building relationships with fintech and exploring potential collaboration opportunities - evaluating direct investments into fintech in series A to C - leading / coordinating experiments the bank run either internally or with external partners

If you are happy with your decision then there’s no foul but I can’t help but feel you are giving too much credence to the possibility of stress of what is an unknown. In any event it would be a scenario for you to manage and work to protect a wlb, and there’s nothing to say that in your current role conditions change over a 24 month period to the same or worse which you fear this new role risks bringing. I’m very risk adverse myself but when it comes to getting out of your own way for your own good... it’s worth trying to assess the situation without allowing your worst fears to be a distraction. In another day in another city a jolly fine chap is accepting the 500k role and going in with a battle plan to manage hard to protect his priorities.

Can you PLEASE take that other job and recommend me for this other 350 Tc job. I ll give you half my signing bonus. 💯

I’ll wash your dishes for life for that salary

Take it. Worst case scenario you push back on insane expectations, work a 40 hr week and cruise for a few years until youre let go.

likefunnysmart

This may seem oversimplified but if you’re considering not taking the offer because of hours, expectations and working style of your bosses why not have a frank conversation with them about those areas? The first two are obviously a little easier to discuss. You may find that their expectations are right in line with what you’re thinking and there’s no reason for concern, or you may get validation that they are expecting you to kill yourself, hence making your decision a lot more straightforward.

And yes, happy to help people if they need help. Separately, I have been thinking of teaching my skills in a community college so folks don’t need to go to a fancy school and pay a small fortune for something that is largely common sense in my opinion and then some core math principles

Apologies if this came across as a flex as it certainly wasn’t meant to be. For what it’s worth, I specialize in something that is a combination of many different disciplines (strategy, math, customer and competitor behavior, operations etc.- not technical) and have just been lucky to have found an area I am good at and enjoy while someone is ready to pay for it. And with two young kids, I am seriously gravitating towards declining the new offer after hearing some of the responses from fellow fish. I haven’t had a hobby in years between work and bring up the kids and this job will allow me that.

Been in a similar situation 2x in the past year - 30% TC increases but way more stress... Managed to turn down both and besides thinking about them occasionally I'm happy. (Note: I am still in consulting and they were other firms.) I got great advice when Ibwas considering my choices. "First you'll think about what you turned down almost daily, then weekly, then you'll never really think about what you said no to."

like

Wow.. Do you need advice or just flexing? I believe 95% of the folks in this forum would not be making anything close to 350K (500K doesn’t even come close). You should be providing insights to folks in this group.

350k is pretty standard for <insert step right before Partner here> in strategy consulting

likehelpfulfunny

You care about WLB and the additional $150k will probably have a negligible impact on your happiness. I’d stick with the $350k job. It goes against intuitions but is probably the better decision.

This thread got a lot more responses than I expected and I am truly grateful for all the advice that validated my gut. Will be declining the offer tomorrow and spending my extra time more productively with family, learning a new language and trying to work out more regularly. Sometimes you need a situation like this one to realize how much extra time you have and how little you do with it. As I have mentioned previously, feel free to reach out to me via DM if I can help anyone or if you have any questions. Thanks again to all my fish family.

If I were you, I would stay with the current job and enjoy that extra time. If you can get a 500tc job today, you can get it a year later or a few years later. I will just enjoy the current job, but that’s me. Everyone is different and have different priorities that will help make their choice

Keep your current job and pick up a hobby. Volunteer somewhere, get a sport, join a D&d group, etc. At some point numbers are just numbers, peace of mind is worth much more

I have done this on a smaller scale. Banking vs consulting post MBA. Banking pays 300k TC first year, consulting about 200k. TC goes up for both year after year but the gap remains. But I chose consulting because I want to have a semblance of a life.

I’m in a similar position (with less money lol) and took the role that paid less and had WLB. Sometimes I think money can blind us. Your boss is your single greatest indicator of your experience on the job, if you like your boss, get paid well, enjoy the work and have a life outside of your career - you’re winning

This. I’m much happier with a TC of $170K because of my boss.

Didn’t read through all the comments but in case no one has said this, it sounds like you are trying to talk yourself out of an opportunity based on unknowns. I would say take it unless you are willing to pay 150K a year to stay where you currently are. Lastly, congratulations! I don’t hear stories like this often enough.
