Recently started with therapy. I feel like the therapist just tells me things a friend would (like take deep breaths, it’s ok if you fail) and not really giving me any practical tools beyond that.

Styles of therapists vary. Have you given this feedback, asked to be challenged more, asked for homework? Ask them to describe the technique they are using (ACT, CBT, EMDR...) or plot the path forward (make sure they have a plan).

Getting s therapist that fits you is like dating. I think you often have to go to several until you find the right one. What you’re describing sounds like this therapist might not be a good fit. Like the first post said go on some more “dates” and search for therapists who use some of those other techniques. I also like more directed and goal oriented therapy and not just talk therapy. I found one therapist in my current city who was great for about 2 years and then I got to the point of just needing a different approach. All of this is ok - and def not all therapists will address your needs so you have to be selective


Also are there therapists who have a better understanding of our jobs? I told my therapist my anxiety is impacting my ability to communicate effectively, and she told me what is important is that I am doing the job... doesn’t matter if I am not a good talker. I get it that they may not understand every single industry out there, but i feel like my therapist and I are from two different worlds and I don’t know if she understands at all. Not to be ageist but it feels a bit like telling my grandparents why I am stressed at work.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is great for folks who like activities and actions they can take to work themselves out of a situation. Sounds like you are one of those people. The reality is that a weekly therapist visit is an hour a week. CBT is something you can work on all the time, especially in the moment when you are feeling down.
Read, "Feeling Good". An excellent read and lots of exercises.


Is this normal? If this is all therapy is about, I am not sure it’s super helpful to me. But also don’t know I just need to find a different therapist.

I haven’t been diagnosed but have suspected for a while something is up. I have been pretty unmotivated for years even though I was a high performer. Currently feel as if my career is going sideways/backwards and struggle to really get any motivation to do something about it. I know I need to switch jobs because my current employer lied about compensation and my development is not happening. Any tips on what may be going on or how to overcome?

If nothing else, teach yourself how to get through a bad night. Sleep. Read. Binge watch a TV show. On your worst nights, have a plan of how to keep yourself safe, even if that means avoiding thinking


I’m so frustrated. Good looking guy, in his prime , cannot find a woman . I have depression. The women i want , don’t want me. And vice versa. I’m such a terrible mess

I probably always have had low lying depression (per my therapist) but I think my break up finally broke me. After two months, I'm not any better. So I'm hopping on medication for the first time. Day 5 of using Zoloft. How long before I should consider it is or isn't working?


I was depressed a couple of months ago. Cried hours at a time, didn’t want to get up, couldn’t sleep at night due to extreme anxiety. Didn’t think it’d be possible to feel “normal” again. I do now. Had a strong support system, made small lifestyle/mentality changes, started medication, and overtime, little by little started getting better with ups and downs. Saw my psychiatrist today and I’m reducing my dosage now. Hoping this message provides hope to others who are struggling 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I started a job 4 months ago in industry. I was struggling a lot with imposter syndrome in the beginning. I felt inadequate and so anxious all the time. I’ve been going to therapy and started Zoloft. The Zoloft made me feel pretty good about my job for a few weeks. I felt capable and like I deserve to belong. I don’t know what happened but I’m back to feeling like shit about my job again. After any meeting I’m in where I need to speak, I’m left feeling pretty awful and stupid. What should I do?

Has anyone tried EMDR to deal with childhood traumatic experiences? I'm not talking about things like physical abuse etc. but due to separation from parents at a young age which was driven by circumstances and decisions parents made.
Due to this, I don't feel much connection with my parents. It has impacted my romantic relationships and causes constant anxiety at work because I feel like a helpless child inside, lack confidence and self worth and fear failure.
Appreciate any EMDR experiences.
