Most people that work in DC that aren’t in commercial or consulting positions don’t make much money. Take staffers or researchers as an example. Yet most of them live a fulfilled life, many of them come from money and are thus able to afford a non-high paying job in exchange for feeling like they’re making a positive impact. Also, making under a certain $ level in DC comes with subsidies and gov help to stay afloat. I don’t think DC was, is, or ever will be a good indicator of living in a bubble, it is a bubble in itself.
Chief
This is a great perspective. I’m an immigrant and didn’t come from money. Maybe it’s part of the reason why I always want to make more.
Yes and no. Watch this 👇

Sometimes I wonder is he the ignorant one, or am I to not be living like that?
Chief
I know exactly what you’re talking about! And they all responded with how much they loved their jobs too!
Chief
I know! You can actually see their eyes light up in the interviews! I envy them.
DC is a unique city in that a lot of folks move there TO do public sector / social / non-commercial work. But a lot of these folks, not all, come from money so can afford to pursue those careers while living in an expensive city.
Obviously there is a pretty sizable commercial industry as well (ex. me), but it’s not the best sample city for that question.
Those jobs paying around 60-100k are also much higher than the avg in America for those relatively young people. So we ARE living in a bubble if we think that’s not good money
We are absolutely in a bubble. The average salary in the US is $51k.

I have watched same program and have had similar reactions. However, think about selection bias. If I was asked to be interviewed for that, I would say no. Also, I live in DC

Yes, compared to most other people. No, compared to some of our fellow 🐠 on this app.
Could anyone post the link to this tiktok series or the creators username who made it??
Weird flex but ok
Chief
Not flexing. Just making an observation. Nothing to flex about. Maybe figure out your own insecurities first.
I wouldn’t put too much stock into anything you hear on a platform controlled by the CCP https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2021/06/25/tiktok-insiders-say-chinese-parent-bytedance-in-control.html
If you’re interested in the series check it out here: it’s under the “reels” section. Please get over the sinister CCP/PRC BS.
I would just add that as someone in GPS this disconnect is always a fun conversation with clients….

Also, not a chance in hell I’m telling my real salary if she catches me out there.
