Washington DC is about an hour I believe. They call it a shuttle because it’s so short and frequent . I loved DC as a kid and I assume they have pretty much any hotel you’d want in the area

I’d just take the Amtrak if in going to DC. Kids love trains too and it’s basically the same time once you add in airport hassle

Cleveland, OH! Hour flight and lots of kid friendly things….great zoo, beaches and playgrounds on the lake, Memphis Kiddie Park. You could even go to Cedar Point (about an hour west of cleveland). There’s also the Big Bear Lodge (I think that’s the name, it’s an indoor-outdoor water park resort). And the Lake Erie islands are nice too! Plenty of TownePlace Suites and Residence Inns.

General musing - it seems like the vast majority of recs in here are for super expensive hotels and resorts (St Regis, etc). I work in consulting and make good money but can’t fathom spending $600+ a night on a hotel. Am I really in the minority or is it just that ppl staying at the Ritz want to show off?
