How long will you be in Japan? If you’re doing a week or longer (or if you are doing city to city bullet train travel) then the JR rail pass is worth it.
^The wild deer in Nara are fuckin savages now though LOL
Will def check out Fushimi-inari shrine and Arashiyama bamboo forest in Kyoto!
It can be. You can price out how many trains you’re likely to take to see if it’s worth the price. JR pass also gives you access to some city transport systems but not all.
Recommend doing an overnight at one of the temples in Mt Koya that has an onsen/bath. Also fun to stay at a ryokan. Also day trip to fushimi inari and to Nara for the deer.
At Osaka, I stayed at Marriott which is in the tallest building in the city. Nice lounge and also you get a free pass for you and a guest to the observatory in the building.
In Kyoto, definitely check out Nishiki market. And then all the temples. More old world than Osaka, which is more modern.
There are a few 1/2-day itineraries online that are really helpful. Also make sure to check calendar for big festivals. Those are really fun so best to time your trip during one of them
Not sure where you plan on going but I don't think the JR pass is worth it. The nightlife in Tokyo can be hard to figure out as they don't really have the same open/bar hopping culture we have in the west but if you're looking for a good time with American locals I'd go to Geranamo. In Kyoto I'd reccomend Cycle Kyoto it was a really great way to explore everywhere and Kyoto is really flat which makes a bike tour ideal. All the travel blogs recommended staying in a Ryoken and we did one for $800/night and it was the most horrible experience...overpriced and definitely not worth it. The bamboo forest and a day trip to Nara were also highlights of Kyoto/Osaka. Osaka was my absolute favorite it's like a Japanese Venice and definitely worth 2-3 days - I'd recommend staying in Dotonbori.
JR pass may be worth it if you’re going out to Osaka/Kyoto, def if you’re going out to Hiroshima too. Like somebody said, do the math.
St Regis in Osaka was fantastic and only 20k a night. I second Dotonbori in Osaka. Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto was probably my favorite thing in Japan
Agree with the above re JR pass - if you have a week or less, Tokyo & Kyoto will be sufficient. We did one day in Osaka and it wasn’t worth it - would have rather spent the extra day in Nara or Kyoto (so much to see! Good to explore by bus too).
If you’re doing at least a round trip from Tokyo to Kyoto then I think the JR Pass is worth it. It’s about the same price and the convenience of it just makes things so much easier. You need to activate it in Japan before you can use it. I second everything that B1 said. You can also do a day trip from Kyoto to Arashiyama. Definitely do a ryokan but it should not cost $800/night. Wasn’t a big fan of Osaka. One day there was enough for me
I personally enjoyed Osaka a lot. Great night life. Used it as our base for exploring Kansai
Get the JR pass if you're traveling to Kansai from Tokyo. In Kansai, definitely do the temples in Kyoto and do a day trip to Nara where you can feed and pet wild deer
would def*
