Recommending a friend who’s a well accomplished PHD in the medical field with an MBA. He sent a 2 page resume. Want to tell him to condense it to 1 but not sure if this is an applicable scenario here for the 1 page rule. Thoughts?

If applying to a consulting role, 1 page. If a research or academic role that will leverage his PhD, 2 is fine

like

He can have 2 pages if he published a groundbreaking thesis on relativity, or was part of the COVID-19 vaccine team. Or if he has started a few successful bio tech companies on the side. Otherwise 1 one page please.

Depends on the company culture. We tell PhDs that multiple pages or CV format are ok (in US, at least this is what I know). Don’t send 17 pages with every conference ever attended, but do use two if needed and if for McK. What’s more important than length is getting the info on there, like leadership and community things. PhDs tend to overemphasize their scholarship and that misses other important skills we want to see.

I have been told one page for every 10 years of experience.

I hold fast to the one page per 10 YOE guideline and see nothing wrong with a 2 page resume if the person has experience to back it up.

like

Absolutely no need to condense to 1. That rule is handy for 25 year olds. If someone had a PhD and work experience, I expect to see more from them on a resume

One page for entry-level or straight out of school/academia. Now if you have industry-specific experience with substance, you can go over the 1 page rule.

A ‘well accomplished’ PHD with an MBA’. I would expect nothing less then a full 2 pages.

My sister and I are 29 and 31, respectively. I’m struggling with something that has irked me our entire lives. My parents pay for things like her dog’s medical bills, vacations and moving expenses. She has savings and isn’t struggling financially. Why does this bother me so much?
