Recruiter from a different firm reached out. I’m happy where I’m at, but is it worth it to go through the interview process to find out my market value (salary range, etc.)?

I'm off the opinion that you should be figuring out your market value semi regularly. Both in consulting and in industry.

You don't need to invest time in interviews - just ask the recruiter where folks with your experience level have typically come in at with their firm. You can let them know that you want to be mindful of their time so you are bringing it up early on (if you are worried about being too 'forward').

Absolutely. You don’t have to go through the whole interview process. You can inquire about salary range immediately.

like

Yes, you ask about role and expected salary range. It’s all in how you ask.

Only for a firm you don’t want to work for. Don’t waste time of a company you might actually want to work for in the future. They keep all your records, and you will likely have to answer that question.

I know a more senior woman who does this every year, just to make sure she stays on top of what her worth in the market is. I think it’s brilliant (though I certainly wouldn’t advertise it to my firm)

like

Or would I just be wasting the recruiter’s time, since that’s really all I want to find out. Don’t want to be an asshole, but would like to know my market value, as I head into the annual review and merit process for my current firm

for sure, worst case scenario is you find out the opportunity isn’t right for you and maybe you keep in touch for a more appropriate role later on

Never hurts to know what’s out there

I agree with everyone above but caution the grass isn’t always greener, even if the money is. Think things through and all that.

And never hurts to keep your interview skills sharp and your CV up to date!

Thanks fellow fish. You all have been very helpful!

I hate the fact that when recruiters reach out they don’t say what the salary range is, virtual or in-person, weekly hour expectations, how big the accounting department is, or literally anything you would want to know before deciding whether an interview is worth your time.
