Recruiter gets ghosted by an applicant. Year later, same applicant returns. Recruiter shoots back an email, “I am not calling you for this role even though your background would make you a great fit.”

So can we send similar emails to recruiters when they ghost us then hit us up a year later? Pretty confident that's way more common.

Pretty sure that thought crosses my mind like 4-5 times a year. You never forget a good solid ghosting.

Shouldn’t a recruiter of all people understand that sometimes ghosting happens...

I feel like they explained it pretty well. Ghosting or ignoring is a two way ghost street, it sounds like the person looking for the job isnt blameless here. The shitty part is we (the applicants) cant send a similar email to the recruiter (“Youre telling me about a job this year, but last year you didnt write back when...”) because of who holds the power in the situation. Even though it would feel great to browbeat and shame them like this—lerd knows they probably deserve it.

I was once flown into another city for an interview (3 hour flight) went straight to the agency from the airport, was greeted by the recruiter upon arrival and told by said recruiter to sit tight. Waited there all day for about five hours, and then finally was told nobody could meet with me. Went straight back to the airport and flew back home.

Here’s the difference though: the recruiter lost face by sharing a “prequalified/interested” candidate with her client (the agency). When the candidate didn’t show, it put her judgement/organization into question. Recruiters totally ghost applicants. But few recruiters will ghost a scheduled call or interview (sure it happens, and that’s shitty), but I think the candidate’s ghosting in this scenario deserves this email. If there was an emergency, the candidate should have communicated (even if after the fact). It reflects poorly - both on you AND those who took the time to get to know you and move you to the next round.

Ghosting in general is a gross cancer that needs to end.

That’s okay. A few years ago an agency recruiter told my partner and I to come in for an interview. She arrived 30 min late and had no idea why we were there. We showed her the email. She said she couldn’t meet. N apology. Nothing.

Hmm maybe the candidate should have send a templated email. That mighta fixed it.

You mean a templated “thanks but no thanks” cancellation email? I agree

Recruiters are the flakiest people in this industry. I have never/ would never ghost, but it’s really hard to have any sympathy for a recruiter.

☝🏻what ED1 and many others said. We all know ghosting is shitty and happens on both sides. But the recruiter’s response seems unnecessary and sounds like a personal vengeance to me.

No, the recruiter is doing this fool a favor.

Bad recruiters ghost applicants. Check. This is an interesting and telling tale for everybody out there looking to get hired, or move simply up. People in charge of vetting applicants keep deep files, not just to cut down on wasted time, but because the people they’re conducting searches for, often don’t. Once you blow off an interview with no explanation, you’re done there. And possibly, if the recruiter jumps to another agency, you’re done there. And let’s not forget that recruiters share info. One stupid move can shut you out of so many jobs. It’s a small industry.
