Recruiter: So what did you think?
ECD: Their work wasn’t very good, but they know how to sell and I like that they looked creative. Clothes, aesthetic, and all.
Recruiter: and...?
ECD: Hire them.

People love to hire themselves. This makes sense. I’ll give you 10:1 odds this was said while wearing either an indoor scarf or clear glasses.

This reminds me that I’ve lost my clear glasses. Dammit

Not what you all want to hear, but there is pragmatism in bringing on someone who the client may respond to based on look and personality. Selling the work, even if it’s mediocre, is a valuable skill.

VP2, hiring someone because you know their dad is definitely wrong. More importantly, is your definition of morally wrong just that it's criminal?

I wouldnt hire anyone who wasn’t going to make my life easier. Personality is important but never trumps the work.

Sounds about right. Talent doesn't matter as much as we think, and agencies are full of people that look creative but aren't that good. It's unfortunate.

The selling isn’t the issue. He truly was excited by how creative they looked. The hypocrisy is that he preaches it’s all about making great work but obviously it’s not.

If the work wasn’t very good, what were they selling 👀 ?

Gross. but unfortunately, a big part to hiring is hiring faces to represent your company. Not for me personally, but have seen this in action in the past. They hire and promote people who have branded themselves well, have an influential presence, etc.

Anyone else notice a trend with the mass amounts of layoffs in tech? Why are all their resumes so jumpy? Not like 2-5 years jumpy, like few months at a time jumpy? Then repeat that process over and over until your company is down 50%

Hi all! So first, husband and I are both 28. I’ve been pregnant before and had previous child at 23. I was obviously way younger. Didn’t even try to get pregnant back then. Fast forward five years later, want a baby badly. I am 50 pounds more than I was at 23. And my periods are now irregular. I do get them every month which the obgyn thought was a great sign. But I’m still not pregnant. I cant pinpoint ovulation as some months my period is 29-32 days and last month it was 45. Help

The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review (plus discretionary bonus)

Currently struggling with lack of motivation. I’m in my 3rd year at my firm and when I started I was hitting 9+ billable per day before I left the office. Now, the saying: when there’s no consequence for poor work ethic, and no reward for good work ethic, there is no motivation” hits home. Over the past two years I’ve seen the opposite of indispensable employees. Yet, they sit at the same table as I do and make more. Any advice?

I'm trying to suss out if a new member of our dept hates me or my team (she manages a different team).

My initial take is she's just hard to read and probably a tightly controlled introvert. My direct report felt she's 'cold as ice,' 'bristling' at our suggestions, and forming a clique that wants to do their own thing with no input from our team. He's triggered very easily, and there was no explicit evidence, just a 'vibe' so I wrote it off. (See 1st comment)

“Can we make the drizzle a little more luscious?”

My issue is less with the fact that the word “luscious” is pretty binary. The drizzle is either luscious or it isn’t. My issue is the “a little more” part. So, it’s luscious right now. We want it MORE luscious—but definitely not a lot more, just a little. Otherwise it would be TOO luscious. Can’t have that.
