Recruiters and negotiators
How much is the percentage wiggle room for negotiation?

For example, how much does an hr/recruiter have available to negotiate a salary from the initial offer? I hear people low ball on the first offer and want to know what percentages I can counter with that would be within their range and my range.

As a hiring manager usually 15-20%

like

There is no % . If the company has a robust comp team then chances are they have a salary structure. Typically new and experienced employees are paid at 80% comp-ratio of the salary range, experienced and seasoned folks are paid at 100% Comp ratio and folks with highly specialized skill set or critical roles are paid at 120% Comp-ratio. Essentially 80% is min of the band, 100% is mid of the band and 120% is max of the band. Depending on the budget allocated for this role and candidate’s background the hiring manager will negotiate with the candidate. The market is quite hot for employees I have seen incumbent getting a 30-40% jump. So it depends on how well you negotiate, what the market pays and the budget for the position . Regardless never looked ball yourself as it prolongs negotiation. You want to close the discussion in 2-3 meetings

That’s really good to know! I’ve never negotiated before so this is good information. Do you have these discussions via email?

How would you recommend formatting the email/conversation? What points would you touch on for negotiation?

I really appreciate your thorough response on this, thank you!

Hi all, I have an offer for 63k in the Phx office for entry level tech consulting. Just wanted to know if I should negotiate for a higher salary or potential sign on bonus. I was also curious about the promotion structure for the company. To my understanding, promotions are more frequent than B4 due to it being smaller in the consulting world and was wondering how long it would take to hit senior consultant and manager levels.

I work in tech and have been at my current company for 6+ years now. I’m basically a senior level data analyst and I’m really the only person at my company with that skill set so I get A LOT of high priority requests from every dept. It can get overwhelming. The idea was just floated to hire and train 2 analysts to work beneath me so that I can focus more on strategy, big picture and optimizations. Should I be asking for a raise and title change? I did get a pretty decent raise in February too.
