Recruiters, have you ever cussed out or insulted your candidates? Why?

I asked for $150k in either SF or LA for a second year associate position and the recruiter goes “well.... you don’t have THAT much experience. Let’s reign in those expectations now...” I ditched that recruiter right then and there and found myself exactly what I wanted 🤷‍♀️

From the opposite perspective, I’ve certainly felt like cussing out more than one of the recruiters I’ve worked with. Maybe it was mutual.

Not a recruiter, but I’ve been insulted by one.

Was told I was shooting myself in the foot by not accepting a job $30k+ below comparable firms, told me I didn’t know what I was talking about when I provided data points, told me I would never find another job in my city with my credentials. Overall was horrifically condescending in a way I can’t imagine he would have been if I were a man. Jokes on him, I had multiple other offers within a month that ranged $25k-80k more than the one he got me.

Favorite recruiting behavior? 1) Telling me about a “great opportunity” at the firm I just left, 2) offending my law school (not T14, but top 10 in my field and I was #2 in rankings AND EIC), and 3) insinuating that I can’t get a job on my own. Worst.

Yep, and 1) calling me arrogant after I told them I’m not willing to take a year cut to change practice groups; 2) saying my clerkship isn’t great because it’s only district court; 3) saying I’d never get an interview because I already lateraled once before; and 4) getting upset after failing to pitch a patent prosecution role to me — I’m not patent barred. These are four different people, btw.

I had one recruiter send me insults because I didn’t respond to his text messages within a couple days. Reminds me of teenagers dating.

I was told by a recruiter that I’d never be able to lateral as an associate without a substantial book after year 7. It wasn’t the message that was annoying, but the condescension with which the statement was delivered. But I did lateral when I shouldn’t have, eventually developed a book, and now I’m an EP at an AmLaw200 firm.

I’m a recruiter and no. I’m honest and open with them but would never cuss them out or insult them. That’s a sign of a bad recruiter and I’d worry about their interactions with others on my behalf.

I have been reading posts from newer associates about bad things partners have done or said to them and I think it could be fun for some of us more senior lawyers in the bowl to tell stories of mean things partners did or said to us when we were new associates. Hopefully it stays mostly light and not horrible things.
