Ask the current associates offline, and if you can LinkedIn message any associate that has left the practice group you’d be joining in the last couple of years. The whole idea is that the new hire joins and things are less busy. A lot of times in the interviews candidates ask what they should know and why we are looking. They will struggle to be honest. I think a better way of getting this info is asking how soon they need you. The less flexible, the busier they are. Also, ask if they’re filling any other positions quickly. If the answer is yes, they’re swamped.
I think though that if that’s what you’re told up front it’s an obvious flag. Same thing happened to me and oh boy were they being honest: the volume at my current firm is crushing. Been there a while now but trying to find a way out. In my experience, it’s just not sustainable. Your experience might be different but they told me during the interview hoe fast paced and busy they were.
