If they’re banking on this on job, you should let them know
Be honest and let them know ahead. They are a friend. They can then opt in or out of the screening if there’s no point in moving forward. It will help manage expectations and give context as to why they won’t move forward. I would want to know ahead of wasting my time. Then it’s my choice and I’m empowered rather than being rejected for something that could be avoided.
1. Let them know now ahead of time? Don’t want to kill their spirit or 2. Just leave them to go through the process and find out. I was told by the recruiter that I referred them to and didn’t let the recruiter know that is my friends situation.
What kind of work authorization would that be? Just curious.
OPT work authorization

I ve been in their shoes and on OPT. I would give my heart and soul to an interview that is willing to sponsor me. So it’s better you let the candidate know so they don’t waste their time
