Relatively new, just curious - how often do you make mistakes, and how do you recover? I’m finding that I have a ton of anxious about making mistakes, and lately, a ton of anxiety in general. Does it

I appreciate the honesty, thank you!

You’ll get better with experience. Just keep at it. I made an embarrassing number of mistakes as an associate. Still make mistakes. I know it’s easier said than done but try to be inquisitive about your work than anxious. Ask intelligent questions to your seniors and be relentless. You’ll get to where you want sooner than you think.

Thank you so much for your response! I’m usually really patient with others and with myself, but this is something I’ve always wanted to do so I think that’s driving the anxiety. It comes from a good place, because I genuinely want to learn and do well, but it’s manifested as nerves and anxiety. I’m trying to tell myself that I basically jumped to a new career but that almost exacerbates it, for some reason.

I’ll definitely keep at it, and I’ll definitely keep asking questions. Do you ever worry that your questions are stupid? I never hesitate to ask, but it’s always a lingering thought for me.

Would highly recommend the book Mindset, by Carol Dweck. Changed my whole outlook on challenges and helped reduce anxiety over "being wrong".

Now I can view "mistakes" as me learning and continuing to grow. Also changes how I react to them - able to own my mistakes more straightforwardly, rather than defensively - and find that others also react better to that attitude, building a virtuous cycle.

Also changed how I give feedback. A lot of the advice is targeted towards raising kids, but very easy to adapt to the workplace 😂

Agree with P1. If I get through a week without making a mistake, I probably wasn’t all that busy (which might have been a mistake in itself). The continuum of how large the mistake is varies widely, of course. What I’d emphasize is: you get more comfortable about not worrying about making a mistake BUT you also get more comfortable with how to address the mistakes you make and what help to get and when to get it.

Realizing you’re not alone in addressing anything helps a lot to give comfort. For example, I regularly will reach out to my partners and team and discuss what I’m thinking and what we might do. That dialogue helps to quell fears of mistakes.

A long time ago, someone told me something that’s guided me: “if you’re not sure what to do, consult someone...if you’re not positive what to do, consult someone...if you’re sure of what to do, DEFINITELY consult someone!” Has kept me from making lots of mistakes and has set up support for when I do.

Hope that helps

Never. Not since 1985
