Do your research on taxes first before deciding.. DC income tax is 10% while in Va it’s 5.2% (or around there). Most people don’t live in DC unless their office is right there and they don’t want to commute, ie capital hill staffers. A car is compulsory in the DMV area, I’m from the area and have lived here the majority of my life, trust me, you will wish you had a car if you don’t buy one.
You only pay tax on the car in VA if the nada value is over $22k or something around there .. so that tax is escapable for most.
I haven’t had a car here for several years and I’ve been fine. DC has great public transportation and it’s typically way faster to metro than drive, and parking is a hassle and parking spots are expensive. (If you work way out in VA or MD, or do a lot of weekend trips, that changes the math though). My read on Navy Yard is that it’s very nice - new buildings, a couple new restaurants, coffee shops etc., but it’s a little soulless. Everything in that neighborhood was built in the last 3-4 years and everybody that lives there is from out of town, so it doesn’t feel like “DC” to me at all, and you’re fairly cut off from the rest of the city. If you’re looking for a fancy and quiet neighborhood and a new building with fancy amenities Navy Yard is your spot, but if you want to live in a place that actually feels like DC I’d explore a few other neighborhoods too.
It’s doable, there’s a couple of metro lines that run through there, but it’s not as easy as living in NW and walking everywhere!
Idk… I haven’t had a car for 7 years living in U ST, Shaw and Ledroit areas. Haven’t missed a car one bit.
I live in Navy Yard with out a car and love it. I’ve never missed my car payments, gas, insurance, & maintenance costs. The extra cash was great and when I break it down I’m saving money even with rentals/Ubers. Also when people say I’m missing out on “DC culture” I laugh because it just means they are jealous that I’m not experiencing crime on the reg and am able to walk outside at night.
A shooting in your neighborhood was national news like 2 weeks ago, but sure, you don’t experience crime on the reg compared to all of those other people in DC
Car is convenient - nice to drive around to wineries and road trips; navy yard - 1.6k, it’s not bad. I have a friend who pays 1.8k in AdMo for a studio.
Navy Yard has no personality, just a bunch of homogenous high rises with the fresh scent of gentrification. Admo has character, is pretty safe, and always has something going on
Dont het a car bc i have one and I regret it
I’ve been here 7 years and have never had a car. Have not missed it.
1.6 seems cheap in navy yard. Is it in a house or a building?
I sold my car in November 2019 and miss it a little but it’s a hassle to have it. You’ll pay 200 a month in any building or if you’re lucky you can get zone parking. I drove like once a week and spent so much kn maintenance and a new bumper when mine got ripped off in admo 🥲
I definitely save money not having a car, but am mostly stuck in the city since actively spending money on rentals is harder for me than the sunk cost of a car lol.
It’s a building but the apartment is pretty tiny
Living in Navy Yard entirely depends on whether you’re okay with people assuming you’re Republican. As for a car, I think it depends on how often you go out of town to visit friends/family and where they are. I don’t use mine much during the week, but on weekends it’s nice to be able to get wherever I want.
Sold my car 3 months into living in DC. You don’t need it between the subway, city bike, scooters and cheap lyfts/ubers around $15 to get most places. Parking in DC will run $150-$200 a month. I used to only use the car for groceries and now use instacart.
I’ve been in Navy Yard for almost 3 years and haven’t had a car since I moved here. I can literally see the metro entrance from my apartment and my building has cars to rent in the garage anytime I need one. You will pay $2K+ for anything around here, but I enjoy it a lot. I’d enjoy it more if there weren’t so many losers with Trump signs still in their windows, but nothing is perfect.
You in 1205/west half @slalom 1?
Studio I'm navy yard starting at like 2-2.3k per month. No car necessary uber metro is every where.
