Relocating to NYC for work. I know absolutely nothing about the area. Any recommendations on where to live without breaking the bank, with an ok commute to Manhattan for work? I’ve heard Brooklyn, New Jersey city etc

I’ve seen a few threads like this recently and the advice I most agree with is, if you don’t already have friends and family in the area, and especially if you aren’t moving here with a spouse, live in Manhattan or the more “popular” areas of Brooklyn until you’re a little more established here (couple of years), even if that means taking a small place or a roommate. Then you can make a better informed decision about your particular needs and desires and whether the cost savings of Jersey etc make sense for you.

Thanks so much for this

I’d rather not here but I’ll DM it to you. Also StreetEasy will be your best friend here.

The AC train drops directly into the main Google building, and will also get you closest to the Pier 57 office. It’s going to be a bit of a walk to get over there. If you want to walk to work, live within 20-30 min radius so that means Chelsea, West Village, etc.
Like someone else said, with that budget and getting a roommate or two you could really stretch your budget or get a much nicer place. People have mental blocks against roommates but it’s super common in NYC even as you get older, and quite frankly you’re not home that often if you’re social.

For $3k you can get a studio in Manhattan or a larger studio/1 bed in Brooklyn, or take the Path in daily from Jersey.

There’s a housing-ny@ internal group I’d recommend joining, you may be able to gBnB someone’s apartment while you figure out where to live, or even take over someone’s lease.

Hard to give more advice without knowing what kind of lifestyle you want and what size apartment you want.

Look on StreetEasy - not sure answers here will be most up to date, the current rental market is crazy rn

Midtown East has cheap apartments, consider subletting at first. Upper West Side also a good place to live.

Try studios in Astoria, greenpoint, Williamsburg, Chelsea, or Hell’s Kitchen

Where in Manhattan is your job?

Are you open to roommates? I know you want to save money, etc. but if you want a social life/short commute, it’s worth a couple extra bucks or a roommate.
