Relocating to NYC in a month and just started looking into apartment hunting. Would love some tips and advice from you guys. Primarily looking in midtown area if that makes a difference

Some brokers are okay, but I agree with C1 that most are pieces of shit. Some tips:
- Be proactive - own the process
- Get the StreetEasy app and check it often
- Look for places that don’t charge a broker fee
- Be honest with yourself about what you value in the neighborhood and the amenities you think you’ll need for the apartment

Btw, I live in HK and don’t think it’s for poor people. It’s definitely not as ritzy as Murray Hill or UWS, but it has some nice spots and convenient transit options.

There is no good way to use poor 🙄

Streeteasy, search no fees. If you want to save money, upper East/west. EV and that Murray hill pocket are next up. Then Chelsea, west village and the greater area will be the expensive parts. Personally did UES for 2 years and it is definitely slow for night life, but close to LGA and subway to our office is 20 mins. Split a 3 bedroom for 4K in a prewar building. No fee either.

Two weeks should be fine, you’ll just need to narrow your search to that availability. If you’re moving in February, demand should be less fierce. Worst time to move is summer and spring (people graduating, interns willing to pay a ton of money up front). Also make sure you have all of your paperwork in order so you can sign on the spot if you like a place. This means tax forms, bank account screenshots, offer letter or pay stubs, proof of income. These aren’t mandatory at a lot of places but I’ve been asked for all of them at some point

like

Also following - are the west village/surrounding neighborhoods really worth the expense?

SA1 WHAT. where were you living, I need to know the deets because I would like to live in that apt

Don’t rent unless you see the place in person first. Don’t sign anything with a broker until you’ve picked an apartment. Some will try getting you to sign something that basically says they’re the only broker you can work with. Check out StreetEasy got no fee places. In nyc it’s common for the renter to have to pay broker fees. This will help you avoid that.

I’m moving in a month and definitely going to choose West Village - it’s most like London so I’ve got to have some home comforts 😂

👋👋 K2 - looking forward to moving! I wouldn’t be able to afford the WV but I’m moving with my other half so it’s a little easier.

like

Set a few very firm criteria and then be flexible and open on the rest. No apt is perfect.

Also you’ll never get a sense of street noise when seeing an apt so either try ask a building tenant/doorman.

Thanks a lot for the great advice. Some additional info:
- My company will be covering rent up to 3k so I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest options available but rather best value at that price (or above if absolutely needed)
- They do not cover up front expenses like brokers fees, so will try to avoid them. Been following streeteasy for a while and seems to be quite commonly available in midtown
- Will be living with my partner so primarily looking for alcove studios and 1BR
- Hells Kitchen seems to be the most promising neighborhood for now, but have also considered Long Island. My thinking is that I wanna try Manhattan for the first year for the full experience and perhaps try something else later
- I have a place for the first two weeks there. Will that be enough to find a decent lease? How fierce is the competition generally? What determines if you get a place you apply for?

What’s a good estimate for utility bills etc? Should around 150 be enough on average?

For one bedroom? Yeah that’s probably around right.

Go to StreetEasy and search for NO FEE. Go to FB groups and Nooklyn to find roommates! If you budget is above 2.8k you should be able to easily find a nice NO FEE studio lol

Me live in Tudor City for 4 years, me like very much.

Working in a startup atmosphere or for a startup sounds so fun to me, but I just don’t know how to meet people also interested in this topic local to me.
