In the early weeks I scheduled calls with each department member (small team) and asked about what they did, where I could help, etc and then asked some generic personal questions (hometown, weekend plans) to start the conversation. Then I would IM people and follow up on things. It gradually built from there. Our group is pretty relaxed and we have individual and department IM channels filled with weekend stories, home renovation questions, dog pictures... that helps the new folks get to know everyone pretty well.

How big is your team? Do you have any other remote team members and do any happen to live close to you? We do team happy hours on Fridays (you don’t have to drink) but no work talk allowed - it allows us to get to know each other on a personal level which is really helpful.

I have some people outside the US as well so we do a tea/coffee in the morning as well. The other thing I’ve found works well, which you may be doing already, is to start meetings with new people with just a bit about yourself so that people get to know you and not just get right into work. I’d also highly encourage seeing if you have any other remote employees in your general area and meeting for lunch or something, even if they’re not in legal with you.

Use the selected chat feature liberally (slack, teams, etc).

Hey all, I’m applying for a job at KPMG, anyone willing to give a referral?

I’m resigning from a job I like at a great company for a similar role at another (seemingly) great company in a different industry that I think will provide more opportunity and be a great resume builder. But I feel so sad resigning. I cried when I told my boss. Is this normal? This was my first full time job.

Hi guys, Any tips for interviewing at Microsoft for Sr. Operations program manager role? Thanks in advance!

Anyone have experience moving from a specialized in-house role to a more general corporate one? And if so, how did you market yourself for the new position? I’m currently in commercial leasing, but I’m eyeing some corporate counsel roles and want to know if it’s a waste of time (for all parties) for me to apply. I have heavy contract drafting experience, so I’m curious whether that can be leveraged for roles where I’ll be drafting totally new types of contracts. I have about 4YOE, FWIW.

Been offered a Sr. leadership position making significantly more money at a different company. I’m relatively new to this field, so I’m not sure I should take the leap. Also worth mentioning I do not get along with my current boss and my current role is newly created so they haven’t given much thought to what my career trajectory would look like . On the other hand I am learning a lot and I really like the company. Any opinions here?

Interviewed for in house role but didn’t hear anything for 1.5 wks. Followed up with the recruiter in HR over email who called me and told me that they were deciding whether to hire internally or externally and ultimately went internal (an atty who was there on a contract, transitioned to full time to fill the role.) She said it was an “extremely difficult decision” as I was the top candidate. Is it worth asking if they anticipate expanding their team in the future? Odds they offer later on?

Additional Posts (overall)

Since Covid has made all meetings virtual, it has become completely commonplace at my company for people to be double and triple booked for meetings, with the expectation that they will jump between all of them, chiming in as needed and asking to be caught up on what has been discussed if they have missed something. This seems completely unreasonable/unworkable to me as standard practice but I have never worked in another corporate environment having come from private practice. Is this common?

Post-Friday Fun Thread…tell your funny stories from the prior week here.

This past week, I met with my CFO, HR exec, and an HR manager to review OSHA’s templates for employer vaccination policies. Our HR exec began discussing the part of the policy allowing employees to use “duty time” to get vaccinated. I point out the ripe (but admittedly childish) comedy potential of this section of the policy. Being a predominantly Gen X crowd, Beavis and Butthead impressions and jokes follow.

Thanks OSHA!

Entered to the company as its first in-house counsel

The legal issues were previously handled by the CFO with help of outside counsel. 1st year was hard because he was territorial about legal matters, but I reported directly to the board so it wasn't a true issue

2nd year: The CEO retires, and the new one decides to put me under the CFO in the organigram. Now I'm back to square one bc this guy cuts me off any relevant issue!

What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw. Feeling pretty frustrated. I got a new job a year ago. I have an amazing boss and love the work. I was supposed to move to one city but never did because of the pandemic. Now my boss has a new boss who wants me to move to a different city where most of our team is. HR is refusing any moving assistance because I “should have already moved.” I repeatedly asked about moving and was told to stay put. My boss is advocating for me but it’s a F10 so little movement. Why are HR departments like this 😒

Started an in-house job after leaving a firm. I love it. Looking back on my old job, I now realize how gaslighted and manipulated I was. People at the new job treat me with such respect, it feels amazing (also sad that my bar is now so low).

As a result, I'm super motivated to do a good job and deliver, but this is a BIG job, one where I can't come close to clearing my plate every week. I'm working 12 hour days to be as responsive as I can, but I know that's a recipe for burnout. Advice?
