In the early weeks I scheduled calls with each department member (small team) and asked about what they did, where I could help, etc and then asked some generic personal questions (hometown, weekend plans) to start the conversation. Then I would IM people and follow up on things. It gradually built from there. Our group is pretty relaxed and we have individual and department IM channels filled with weekend stories, home renovation questions, dog pictures... that helps the new folks get to know everyone pretty well.
How big is your team? Do you have any other remote team members and do any happen to live close to you? We do team happy hours on Fridays (you don’t have to drink) but no work talk allowed - it allows us to get to know each other on a personal level which is really helpful.
I have some people outside the US as well so we do a tea/coffee in the morning as well. The other thing I’ve found works well, which you may be doing already, is to start meetings with new people with just a bit about yourself so that people get to know you and not just get right into work. I’d also highly encourage seeing if you have any other remote employees in your general area and meeting for lunch or something, even if they’re not in legal with you.
