Followed up with the recruiter in HR over email who called me and told me that they were deciding whether to hire internally or externally and ultimately went internal (an atty who was there on a contract, transitioned to full time to fill the role.) She said it was an “extremely difficult decision” as I was the top candidate. Is it worth asking if they anticipate expanding their team in the future? Odds they offer later on?

What is the avg market comp for a VP HR in a mid-size company in the SF Bay Area? Responsible for a disperse team across 8 states, overseeing compliance, recruitment, and workforce development?

Since Covid has made all meetings virtual, it has become completely commonplace at my company for people to be double and triple booked for meetings, with the expectation that they will jump between all of them, chiming in as needed and asking to be caught up on what has been discussed if they have missed something. This seems completely unreasonable/unworkable to me as standard practice but I have never worked in another corporate environment having come from private practice. Is this common?

This past week, I met with my CFO, HR exec, and an HR manager to review OSHA’s templates for employer vaccination policies. Our HR exec began discussing the part of the policy allowing employees to use “duty time” to get vaccinated. I point out the ripe (but admittedly childish) comedy potential of this section of the policy. Being a predominantly Gen X crowd, Beavis and Butthead impressions and jokes follow.

Just got rejected from an in house role that I was feeling pretty good about. They actually called me in for this role after passing over me in the fall. I talked to everyone in the department. Hiring manager had reached out to me before I met the others to provide addl background on everyone else I was meeting. Is it appropriate for me to ask the hiring manager for feedback here? This one hurt.

I signed a non-compete when I started and now cannot find my copy anywhere in my files. Any way to get this without raising suspicion? I am not looking to leave at all but do want a copy of this in case it is needed in the future.

The legal issues were previously handled by the CFO with help of outside counsel. 1st year was hard because he was territorial about legal matters, but I reported directly to the board so it wasn't a true issue

2nd year: The CEO retires, and the new one decides to put me under the CFO in the organigram. Now I'm back to square one bc this guy cuts me off any relevant issue!

Hey everyone, I’m looking to head in-house in the next 12 months, but I work in a specialized area with v few openings.

I just noticed a job posting for a senior counsel role at a startup. This would be my first in-house role so I was wondering if anyone could speak to their experience as the only expert/specialist in their area at a company? Recognize it’s a massive growth opportunity but also scared of the big jump in responsibility/no safety net.

What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw. I don’t want to be miserable again. I know Amazon is poorly reputed for lawyer WLB… what about other places?

What are some behavioral or technical/skills interview questions that are asked for tech in-house for a senior corporate counsel or deputy GC level role? (Do you see skills-based questions, similar to what software engineers get?)

Feeling pretty frustrated. I got a new job a year ago. I have an amazing boss and love the work. I was supposed to move to one city but never did because of the pandemic. Now my boss has a new boss who wants me to move to a different city where most of our team is. HR is refusing any moving assistance because I “should have already moved.” I repeatedly asked about moving and was told to stay put. My boss is advocating for me but it’s a F10 so little movement. Why are HR departments like this 😒

Started an in-house job after leaving a firm. I love it. Looking back on my old job, I now realize how gaslighted and manipulated I was. People at the new job treat me with such respect, it feels amazing (also sad that my bar is now so low).

As a result, I'm super motivated to do a good job and deliver, but this is a BIG job, one where I can't come close to clearing my plate every week. I'm working 12 hour days to be as responsive as I can, but I know that's a recipe for burnout. Advice?
