There’s a bit more to it than that. I have some history with my friends company. And the compensation and the business of the two companies are very similar.

Is it ideal? No. But you’re not the first and won’t be the last. I had two re-negs just this
month. The truth of the matter is that both institutions will go on with or without you. You have to do what’s best for your own career.
If it's something you found with a recruiter or independently, go ahead. If you used an internal referral and have a decent relationship with the person referring, I'd think long and hard about how/if that might affect them.
I'd probably tell them both, notifying the recruiter first so they have fair warning.

Long story but turning down an in house position because a close contact that I’ve worked with previously who now works at another in house job just offered me a position after I already accepted the other offer.
