You should also check if your rental policy provides hotel coverage in case you can’t use the apartment due to fire/earthquake etc.

Talk to an insurance agent to see if an umbrella policy will close the gap or if you should raise individual limits for the various items you are covering.

My best advice is to choose replacement value and to keep electronic copies of the receipts for all of the things you care about that you mention. The insurance companies have interesting approaches without receipt.

Definitely check what it covers. Our wedding ring requires an individual appraisal and coverage as jewelry was otherwise only covered to 1k.

The most important is coverage for fire, water damage, and earthquake. The rest you can self insure for (just have savings to replace stolen electronics/jewelry) unless you’re storing $50K+ in gems...

If you want coverage above those limits, your premium will be much higher too...

Not worth insuring anything you can afford to replace. Just my 2c

Thanks for the insights everyone. I feel stupid for being this old and haven’t learned these things. But I also don’t want to learn the hard way. Appreciate you not coming at me with snarky remarks 🙂

Keep your house highly leveraged and pass on excess insurance. Take money from routinely refinancing and invest/save it. In case of a disaster give what’s left to the bank and start over again but with cash in the bank.

(Cont): I always knew there were policy limits on jewelry, but now that I'm looking at terms it looks like electronics and a few other things which comprise the most valuable things I own are limited shockingly low to only $1000. I can see some items specifically excluded/limited and will look into getting riders but I also know how insurance companies are in trying to fight payouts and deny claims... so has anyone here made a claim against either renters or earthquake (or homeowners, although I know it isn't exactly a 1:1 comparison)? Any advice for how i can make sure I'm as well-protected as I can be? Or do I have to get individual policy riders on every damn thing I own?!

If one is on a long workshop call (not an optional one and spanning more than a few hours) that spans across the lunch time period, does your firm or client generally provide for lunch when it's been in-person, or reimburse for lunch when it's been in-person or working from home (the latter particularly due to COVID)?
