Renting a car first time ever, what should I know? I have never driven before besides driving lessons. Preferred company? Economy or collect?

Book your rental car thru your EY corporate code (will cover your ass in worst case scenario). Would recommend grabbing the smallest car you can find, sticking to the right lane, and take your time. You'll quickly get comfortable (especially once you memorize your route and don't have to rely on your GPS). You'll do fine!

OP - 15 hours is nothing... I think you should drive another 50-60 hours with someone giving you good feedback. Driving by yourself with almost no experience is a recipe for forming bad driving habits in a vacuum. My mom is a terrible driver after 30 years due to lack of proper education. My sister crashed 3 cars before my parents (who barely practiced with her) noticed she didn't check her blind spots when changing lanes. 99/100 times there is no one there... 1/100 you hit someone. Good to find that stuff out from a copilot first....

Sounds like a recipe for disaster by yourself. Suggest carpooling with someone else to get some experience.. or Uber

like

Just remember that everyone who drives slower than you is an idiot, and everyone going faster is insane

like

Ya Jesus. Don't do that.

like

Get a car that's manageable to a new driver, e.g. An economy or compact. Practice on the highway and quieter roads first. You'll be fine

like

For EY, stick to National

like

Yep. Just cleared the test and took about 15 hours of lessons

Unfortunately I am on a project in a remote location and have no zip car or Uber. I either drive or stop traveling to client site. It's a small town with minimal traffic. While I am nervous to be driving by myself, I learned to drive on the upper east side and FDR drive in NYC. I am hoping this isn't as bad. Thanks guys.

You'll be fine

Two biggest things for highway driving are keeping a safe following distance and checking blind spots

like

Always turn down the extra insurance.. especially if this is your first time driving alone.

like

Best piece of driving advice I've ever gotten: Assume everyone else on the road is a moron. The driver in front of you WILL stop short, the driver next to you WILL merge improperly, etc.

like

Also, set the side mirrors so you can't see the side of your car without leaning. That reduces the blind spots immensely.

like

You have to learn one day why not now, don't try anything funky while driving and you should be fine Also take the smallest possible car

like

OP - if you learned to drive in NYC and on the FDR you're fine. Every place else is a piece of cake compared to there. But keep it small. Go with a compact car.

P3 thanks for the valuable input

Can you tell me what city so I can avoid being there?

You have a license?

like

Stick with intermediate or compact. Use whatever company is allowed by your company. & Drive safely 🙏🏽

My SO starting driving 50 mile route week after she got license. Only driving will give u confidence. So, go for it OP. Make sure you have a GPS. Dont use ur phone, get Garmin or something else for first few months.

Apparently some states are wanting teachers to post online all the curriculum materials they are using & their lessons plans. It is for transparency. I have no problem posting all of that online. But it does open up opportunities for our lessons & materials to be scrutinized out of context. I truly believe it’s another way to undermine teachers. It allows people who know nothing about teaching to tell us how to do our job. This all started with CRT phobia.

What are your philosophies on budgeting and spending money on fitness hobbies? I think this is one aspect that I underestimated the cost of when moving to NYC. I love figure skating and Pilates, but it can be over $30/session for rink/studio access and over $100 per lesson with an instructor.
