Resignation dilemma: after working in a small immigration/family law firm (2 attorneys) for almost 4 years with only a 5% salary increase in that time, I was recruited for a larger family law firm (9 attorneys), offering better benefits and a 45% pay increase, but less flexibility. When I informed my boss, she countered with a 36% increase and unlimited vacation. What started as an easy numbers decision has become a more complicated calculus now. Should I even entertain the counter offer?

Never entertain the counter. If they can pay you that now, they could have paid you that last week. As well as other issues.

likehelpful

Personally, I would never accept a counter. Straight up - if they feel you’re worth that number now, they’re acknowledging they’ve been underpaying you and didn’t care.

likefunny

I don’t entertain counteroffers. Once I decide it’s time to go, it’s time to go. If I am at the giving notice point then the office wasn’t comfortable enough to have an open conversation on salary so it’s time to move on.

I took the other offer, stayed at the new firm for a month and went back to my old firm. I hated the partners toxic personality

Just one colleague. We exchanged some words and it was over as far as I was concerned. Haters gonna hate lol

like

Why did you want to leave in the first place?

Doesn't sound worth staying for. I personally would never accept a counter--if you were truly valued they would have already been paying you that amount.

My F1 OPT visa is expiring in a couple of weeks. My employer sponsors h1b but I didn’t make the lottery. Fortunately my partner and I are getting married and will be filing for green card. However, I’ve heard cases where green card through marriage can fail and in that case I’d be left with no visa status. Would you invest about $20-30k to transfer your F1 visa now to a 2 year CPT program as a safety net?

I’m pretty sure colleagues at my firm are inflating their billable hours. Is this the norm? I suspect many of you will think this is obvious and/or that I’m naive but wtf? I find hitting 2200 is tough even with a good sized work load. Am I just expected to play the game? I don’t want to sound self-righteous but if most are lying just to make the requirement, then maybe the requirement should be lower.
