To give them time to look for your replacement without actually paying you. The minute you accept a counter is the minute they think of you as a flight risk and begin thinking of other options.

Not true. Their hands are tied. They’re doing what they can. Finances are what they are. Here’s your counter. Accepted delay. Ask for $2500 more to cover the delay

Because they actually value you. Any counter means they appreciate you. Otherwise they would happily accept your resignation

Wow, surprised by some of the thoughts here. Counters are generally sincere. I've never thought, "shoot! Offer a counter to keep them on while we find a replacement!" Nor have I ever thought of them as a flight risk after. I agree with CD above. If it's a larger holding company like IPG or Publicis, it unfortunately can't happen over night. And you'll only get one shot at this, so I agree with countering with a larger raise to cover it. Or asking for a small bonus to cover. Good luck. Be happy. Leave if you hate the place. Stay and accept if you enjoyed it but simply weren't paid enough.

They gotta do better than match. You’re passing up fresh opportunity to do the same old shit. Q2 might just be how the payroll is structured. If you’re a big holding company even one extra day of interest % retained helps the margins. Also keep in mind that whatever you accept, you’re not going to be getting a raise for a looooong time.

Currently an SC at EY with an offer at Deloitte Consulting as an SC. I have 4 years of experience and the base pay would be 30% more. If I stay I can get promoted to manager in a year if I leave that may be extended by 2 more years. Deloitte SC take around 4 years to get there vs EYs 2 and everyone I talk to says this is a promotion even if it has the same title. Is it worth it to leave?
