Update: Since my first real watch was a manual winding 1969 Omega Geneve (and because the Singapore duty free had a killer deal), I went back to my roots.
I would get a black bay 58 in the meantime
I can’t second this enough
Get a side hustle and save for it.
I picked up this Breitling Galactic 41 pre owned for $2300 - usually their watches are huge but this one is smaller and fits under your shirt cuff 👍
Look at Tudor
Maybe this will be the year where Rolex finally updates the Sub with the new movement that’s slowly been making its way through their product line. If so, could be easier to pick one up.
At any rate, a normal Sub or Sub Date isn’t as in-demand as the new GMTs let alone a Daytona. I bet if you get on a list with a handful of ADs in your area you can get one within a year.
I've been looking at Speedies, Breitlings, and a few others. One I was considering was a GSotM Speedy. Anyone here own one and care to share experience? They seem to have a healthy gray market mark down, and my understanding is that the ceramic looks new... forever.
Why not buy grey market unworn or preowned? There’s a slew of reputable sellers and no shortage of 116610s/114060s.
Because I refuse to pay a 30% markup. One day the supply balance will even out. When it does, I'll feel like an idiot for being impatient. On the other hand, I could buy a different, but still great watch now, and get a sub later on when more become available.
If you say you want on a list and willing to pay for it now, maybe they are willing to bump you up.
I have done deposits as well. But normally, with hard to get watches. Even if you say you will pay right now, this does not move you up in line. Everyone will pay right now for a popular watch.
ADs are now starting to bundle watches together. So for example, you have to buy a precious metal, before you’re allocated a SS
Took me about four months to get a No Date Sub.
This would be my strategy if I had no relationship: I would visit an AD in my client city (which is ideally in a different state than where I live) and express interest in a Sub. I’d get on a list, if they let you, but I’d also make it a point to know a specific sales man/woman and get their card. Stop in the store maybe once a month to show you’re truly interested (and you might even just get lucky.). Make the occasional phone call to your salesman to say hi and banter about baseworld and watches or whatever. And I bet you’ll have a sub in less than six months, at retail, and they’ll mail it out of state and you’ll save hundreds in taxes.
