...or maybe they asked 4-5 separate recruiters to battle it out.
Are there rogue recruiters out there and what questions should I ask a recruiter if they pose a particular job?
Two things:
* Hiring Manager - the person at the firm/agency who would be the supervisor.
* It is not uncommon that recruiters have to vet things through their manager before talking to the agency.
Not all agencies “retain” a an outside TA person, so you can ask but it’s sort of neither here nor there.
If a recruiter goes fishing and sends a resume without having an agreement in place then they have no reason to expect payment for said resume. I don’t personally know of recruiters who do that, but I’m sure there are skeezeballs out there who would...?
Yes I’d ask for the jd, and I would ask what the interview process is. Start there.
To your friends point - ask the recruiter how the job landed in their lap? A good one will tell you no problem. And you can gauge the quality of the relationship between recruiter and agency from there?
While contingency searches are slowly starting to come back, bigger agencies typically avoid working with outside recruiters. They can hire someone on a freelance contract or full time. (And save money.)
Smaller markets may have more contingency searches because the existing talent pool is smaller and recruiting is harder.
“Retained” typically means the recruiter is paid no matter what. “Contingency” means the recruiter only gets paid if their candidate gets hired.
As someone else said, there are some recruiters out there that will submit someone without having the assignment. Hurts the candidate, the agency and the recruiter. But I think this happens less than it used to.
While there are many pros and cons between the two types... a contingency recruiter can help you pursue multiple jobs at the same time.
