Returning from work after a year of mat leave (Toronto in-house at a BIG company) - can I expect my salary to increase as though I was still working over that year? (Regular increase, obviously not expecting a bonus. Am hoping to get something to keep up with inflation but I don’t know if that’s standard.)

I'm just here to express my jealousy over your ONE YEAR maternity leave. Good for you!!

like

We’re very fortunate up here. You’re actually entitled to 18 months if you can make it work.

like

Does anyone else get the regular increase? Like cost of living adjustment? If others get it, you can get it too. If it’s merit/performance based, it might hard for you to get the increase, just my thoughts

like

It’s usually both! Annual cost of living/regular adjustment based on the performance of the firm generally + a performance bonus. Thanks for the response.

I would assume no, but based off the fact your company allowed you a full year off, you never know!

In Canada you’re entitled to 18 months!

Omg a year 🙌🏻

Is that offer reasonable? or lowball given the current market? Please suggest. Thank you. Deloitte KPMG

Crossposted. Looking for advice. I’ve got 10+ years as an attorney and have been trying to go in house for over a year. I have a generalist background (although I’m primarily a litigator) and was a partner at an Amlaw 100 firm. I’ve had my resume reviewed and keep getting great feedback. Not getting many interviews and when I do, I’m not getting offers despite positive interviews. How do I differentiate myself? Should I get some sort of certification or specialty? This is getting depressing.

My background is in tech transactional. I joined a cybersecurity SaaS startup at the end of last year and now also handle more generalist matters in addition to all things commercial-related. I have a number of books on contracts that I’ve found super helpful over the years (The Tech Contracts Handbook, A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Sign Here, etc.). Can anyone recommend books they’ve found helpful for L&E matters, privacy matters, product matters, or marketing/advertising matters?

I’m waiting for an offer. At the offset of interviewing they told me the range was 180-195 and I said that it was lower than I am looking for generally which I wanted to be up front about, but there was a possibility I could be a bit flexible depending on other factors so I was interested in continuing. Assuming they make me an offer in that range, how much more is reasonable to try to ask for?

I recently started a new job in house. Previously I’ve been at two other companies in house prior. I am in my 8th year of practice and have only done L&E during all previous jobs. I love L&E and was told this new role would be L&E.

Flash forward to starting- the role is 0% L&E and they have me doing contracts, data privacy, IP….I never would’ve taken the role if I would’ve known this is the actual area of law they were going to give me work in but I hate my new job and don’t know what to do.

Only way for me to be promoted and stay in safety is to jump to the business side but I’m hesitant to give up doing legal work.

I’ve found a job opening for a role as legal counsel which, in the requirements section, only mentions data protection, negotiation skills and standard agreements for a EU company, whereas in the tasks also mentions activities related to other fields such as financial regulations, labour and audit. Moreover they do not mention any PQE but only a law degree, nonetheless I’ve seen that their counsels have 5/7 years of working experience. I have 2.5 years of working experience (continues)
