Having a mentor assigned to you from day 1 always made the experience better! Also my favorite internships were when I was treated as an equal (not just an intern). Of course, we understand that we need to do a lot of banners and social stuff, but giving us opportunities to participate on bigger briefs is such a blessing and even if our idea doesn’t get selected, it’s such great experience to be able to present our ideas along with everyone else.

For the love of everything, don’t force anyone to be a mentor, because they’re not gonna do a good job and they’ll make the intern feel like they wasted their summer. Let people volunteer who genuinely WANT to offer mentorship and guidance!! No dumb intern projects. Let them play with some real work, throw some ideas in, practice presenting. IMHO, being an intern should be like being a part of the team for a few months, just with very low stakes responsibilities and the expectation of being a sponge for info and experiences.

like

Second this. Stop making them create gifs, pick party decorations, or other demeaning BS.

In my best internship, I was paid, actually included on briefs and expected to produce work, felt integrated into the team, and was able to work with multiple teams.

like

Pay them. Pay them enough that they don’t need a second job in order to participate. In my intern group there was a guy who had to travel nearly 2 hours each way to our agency because they didn’t pay him enough to move closer. He also had to work part time on weekends. He ended up exhausted and miserable. He left the industry altogether after one internship. Compensation can make a world of difference for your applicants too. You’ll attract higher quality applicants from more diverse backgrounds. Well worth the cost IMO.

As an ACD that's a little outside my control, but they do pay pretty well.

I had one that built the internship on a team model where one intern for each department in the agency was brought in. We all had real agency tasks from our various departments, but we simultaneously worked as a unit on a team project for a real client that was presented at the end of the summer. I had other internships across the spectrum (worked to death for no credit, put in a corner and forgotten about, etc) and the above was by far the most structured and beneficial.

Two creatives btw. One writer and one art director. One planner, one account, one media.

In my best internship, I had opportunities to shadow a bunch of people across the company. I’m a better writer now because I was able to see behind the curtain on so many of the other processes.

The first internship I had (without which I wouldn’t be here at all) was paid, understood my school schedule, and gave me feedback on assignments on a regular basis.

I spent about half my internship shadowing a more senior team. We got the same briefs as them, went to the same internals and reviews with them. Learned a ton, and really enjoyed it.

Hire from HBCUs or local community colleges/universities (make partnerships with those schools) and pay them well.

Being able to see the inner workings of each department.

My internship had us basically working as junior associates. I worked on real campaigns, wrote real copy for brands, pitched concepts to the CD, etc. I learned so much.

Also we were paid $15/hr.
