Rick, thanks for doing this. What are five practical steps I can take to promote social justice in my classroom?

Hmmmm. Five, huh? Let me think. (And feel free to add your own). 1. Do a thorough and honest assessment of your own values and commitments. Many teachers suffer moral injury because their school forces them to do things which they know or against the interest of the students. So we have to hold that tension. 2. Recognize that your main responsibility is to know the students well, to study what it takes to be successful with each one. Each student is a unique bundle of meaning making energy, and you have the possibility of making a difference in their life. 3. Build community. Help students care about each other, respect each other, and do the work for each other. 4. Develop a curriculum of questioning. Allowing the interest and brilliance of the students to guide, at least in part, where you are going. 5. Allow yourself the space to reflect, renew, and re-energize as teaching is a project of reinvention week after week, year after year.
