Unfortunately, counselors and teachers are often separated in our silos. We teachers need to understand better about counseling skills because we are often called upon to support students social emotional health. Counselors on the other hand, are sometimes isolated from the students until they come in during a crisis. So it would be wonderful to have the counselors in the classroom more and have the teachers learning how to deal with the many different hats we are responsible to wear. In the best school structures I have seen, the counselors and teachers work closely together. For instance, going on a field trip, the teachers and counselors are both there and having fun with the students. Canceling of course should not be seen as only responding to crises. Sometimes it is about having fun and building community.
