Ridiculous Q: MBB, do your interviewers really care if candidates use pencils instead of pens during cases?! 😂Friend swears pencils are frowned upon because difficult to read across the table....

Yup. Ridiculous Q. I’ve never heard of anyone here caring about stuff like that.

If I see someone using a pencil I think they are probably an idiot and have the math skills of a kindergartner (since they’re using a kindergarten writing instrument)—the bar in my mind subconsciously becomes much higher and math that I would consider good if done by pen looks quaint and stupid. I expect multidimensional vector calculus if done by pencil; I’m satisfied with counting if using pen. JK—no one cares

If I see someone using a Bic or hotel pen, I immediately think they are a poor that doesn't belong here. My litmus test if if they have a bespoke hand-turned pen for use. They will then gift me the pen after the case as a souvenir of the most important day of their life. I will then use the quality of the pen, not their case results, as the sole hiring criteria. 😂

I used a sharpie McK, similar to the ones Trump signs with, bombed the case but they were so amazed by my confidence they gave me the offer

likefunny

Absolutely. Using a pencil instead of a pen to do cases show that you expect to make some mistakes during the interview and are willing to erase and re-do. Using a pen shows that you are committed. Like Bruce Wayne, you have to learn to jump off without the safety harness to truly unlock your potential

Not a thing

Could not care less. Have never noticed one way or the other. If you show up without paper and a writing instrument that’s not a good leading indicator for preparedness tho

like

Nope I don’t read what people are writing...

I evaluate many case interviews each year. I do not care. Your friend is trying to find reasons he didn’t get the job rather than focusing on the real reason

Hello everyone! Nice to meet you all. I have 6 years of experience across Deloitte & EY and currently studying for the GMAT. Targeting R2 LBS and R1 INSEAD (I’m based in London :) ). I’m currently 30 but very motivated to make a switch to MBB post business school. Should I be worried about my age? Do MBBs prefer younger candidates? More on my experience - working within the Consulting practice at D, doing Tech Transformation work. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all :)

How much room for negotiation is there on role level when moving to MBB as a lateral? Currently M2 at a boutique founded by ex-MBB partners. We often compete with MBB. Recruiters at each firm have steered me towards joining at Associate (M) /Consultant (BB) level which I believe is common practice for lateral moves. This would likely result in a small pay cut for me, even at A3/C3. All have suggested a 6-12 month window to Manager promotion is possible. Would appreciate some advice, thanks!

Seeking advice: anyone have experience dealing with a meddling sister-in-law (brother’s wife)? She’s constantly overstepping the bounds of what I think is appropriate (I.e., bossing around my elderly mother, getting rid of things without asking my mothers permission, changing my mothers decor). It just doesn’t feel right for her to do these things to my mother/interject in family affairs like this. Understandably brother doesn’t want to get in the middle of it. How to handle this?
