Right about to buy my first real watch. I tried it on and loved it, but it’s a Tag and now I feel like I’m making an idiotic decision bc everyone on here seems to have nothing good to say about Tag.

Buy what you like!

I generally agree with this. However, especially early on, you might not know any better. If after you learn why people hate on Tag, see the alternatives that provide more value at the price point, and you still want the Tag, then buy it.

Definitely buy what you like! I just got a Tudor BB36 as my first real watch love it

Agree… fit is critical, so if the 58 didn’t work for you, that’s the next best thing. 😀 My wrists are pretty puny, but the Heritage BB works for me, so I assume the 58 would be okay as well. Wear it in good health!

Carrera Calibre 5, it is only like $2k, any more than that and I’d think more about the overall brand value and start considering Tudor and such.

It’s a classic Tag Carerra design. If the price is right, you can’t go wrong.

There are a lot of watch snobs out there. Tag’s criticism seems to largely be around their marketing 10 years ago and perhaps being overpriced. As other posters have said if you can snag one on a bargain they are great. I’ve got a stainless steel white dial aqua racer as my daily and it looks great and I love it.

Nothing wrong with tags. My first watch was a tag. I purchased it to celebrate my break into consulting. It’s very beautiful Imo and would sell every watch in my collection before I sold this. Buy the watch that puts a smile on your face.

Monaco is the only Tag I would remotely consider.

The new Tag Monaco with the green dial is quite nice and a good investment

Gotta start somewhere, and going for one you love within your budget is exactly how it should be.

Also, I think the biggest thing with Tag is to not overpay

like

Dont worry too much, you can always sell it later and get a nice watch

Tag makes some awesome watches. They also make some fine watches that are just overpriced at retail / need to be on sale. And then they make some watches that are criticized by the watch community.

Agree w/ partner 1 - tell us which one! And yes, ofc buy what you like, but this group can give some context to make sure you understand what you’re buying if you have any questions

like

My first watch was a Tag and I don’t regret it at all. Still love it and part of my rotation. As many have mentioned, buy what you like.

like

^very true

My first nice watch was a tag link day date and to this day it's probably still my favorite work watch despite having many higher tier options in my collection. Tag is funny in that half their watches have strong build quality and the other are of questionably low quality for their price (looking at you, F1 with the hollow end links...). Ultimately if you find one you like and are okay with the price, get it.

If you wanna share what you are looking at we can let you know the full scoop.

My first “nice watch” was an aqua racer. Have always loved dive watches and it was an upgrade from a citizen, that was an upgrade from a victorionox I got in high school. Subsequently upgraded to a 2254.50 omega sea master that was stolen, now have a 114060 sub. The tag was nice to wear and it was what I could afford then, buy what you like and can afford.

I like Tag personallu, great racing history if you are into that

like

It’s a good looking starter watch for sure!

like

You're the one who will be looking at it on your wrist. If you like it, get it!

Buy what you like

The Caliber 5 is fine, nothing wrong with it as your gateway watch! For that money, my opinion would be to look at a used Seamaster Aqua Terra if you like that style (or a used Seamaster Professional 300M if you want more the “diver” look).

Go for it. Tag Carrera classic is a great looking watch and at $2k is great price. tag as your first watch is a great step. My first expensive watch was a tissot only few tags I would choose - Monaco Steve McQueen and carrera classic and some other classics.

1. Cost-of-living (housing!). Could probably afford a nice ~$1.25M SFH in Seattle suburbs sooner than a fair $1.5-2M near Cupertino.
2. Public School quality. Unsure private will be affordable.

I hate that I’m saying this but I really just want a beautiful watch that is horologically great but just has one pusher that sends a signal to your phone to do one specific task. I can’t tell you how often I’m out and about and I would love to just press a pusher on the side of a Tudor or something and it can’t just tell my phone to Shazam a song or something. I don’t want a screen, I don’t want it to be complicated, I don’t want it to be noticeable. I don’t have the answer, just the desire
