Rogue thought for the day, why does every airport have a duty-free that sells bottles of perfume and booze? Of all the things at the airport or in general I don’t feel like paying taxes on I (cont)

Try living in high tax European countries or middle eastern countries where some of those items are banned? In addition to alcohol tax there’s the normal VAT which adds up

I’ll admit the perfume has never made sense either though. But normally I’m just making a beeline for the giant Toblerone bars...

Lol C1: c’mon that’s weak logic and you know it Airports aren’t “consultant” or “3-day travel” exclusive. May not make sense for us to buy when we’re headed to client site, but it may make sense for the the other 85% of the world

like

Duty free is always post security and no ones checking your bags if you’re transferring. In fact in duty frees (if not all), you’re exclusively not allowed to buy unless you’re boarding a flight..

like

D1: OP meant that you can’t buy bottles of stuff on the way out of town because then presumably you will have to get them through security when you’re getting on a flight back home. Unless you plan to drink that whole bottle of scotch by yourself in a span of 3 days.

like

I've always thought these were just scams. Ie no "tax" (aka duty) but base prices marked up above standard rates you'd see outside the airport, so you still pay more. No?

like

Can think of plenty of better options. Hell neither of those two things are allowed through airport security anyways so unless you’re headed home they’re both pretty pointless..

Or worse, sharing with the team 🙅🏻‍♀️

Thanks C1, your thoughts spot on to what I was saying, and yes just meant as a rogue thought not me debating the merits on which customers need what. Just find it amusing that it is majority booze, perfume and candy for sale and that this mix is pretty ubiquitous across the US duty free stores. Consultant brain started wondering who decides this mix and what is rationale. Plenty of other things I’d love to buy duty free to include half the crap I already buy every week, post security for my travel needs.

But for fun and banter on some of the comments above..For those on vacation, heading home and/or just general non business, there are a ton of families and not a single one I’ve seen to date is piling booze and perfume into their carryons. Just strange place and time experience wise to offer up those things. Obviously they keep the square footage so they are selling things to people. Just wonder if they’ve ever analyzed the mix and if so who leads that

like

Hey, just explaining OP’s perspective. Doesn’t mean I agree.

I’m Canadian, so when the dollar was in parity, US colleagues would bring me a bottle every week.

K1 - Costco is the cheapest option. So yes. Agree.

I hate having to give tips for everything when I'm on vacation. I don't want to be carrying cash around. In fact, I don't even want to be thinking about it. I just want to relax!

To be clear, this isn't about the money. It's about the hassle. I'd just rather pay an upfront gratuity fee that covers all of tips for the entire stay.

Help! I'm interviewing with companies. Not sure how to manage this situation:

Company 1: I finished up interviews about 2 weeks ago and have been awaiting on decision. Next step would be verbal offer

Meanwhile Company 2 finally reached out toda and scheduled interviews. I'm highly interested in both.

Also the recruiter from company 1 asked to chat/provide update. I'm worried it's verbal offer. Can I ask C1 recruiter that I want to time to consider both after being put in hold for 2.5 weeks?
