I refer to myself as a planner; my job title is creative strategist. But thank you for confirming you don’t know the difference between media, creative, and brand strategist!

So, I can only speak as someone who coexists with a number of veteran planners. There seems to be 3 viable routes:
- start a consultancy
- freelance at agencies as a “pop in for big meetings” planner at an exorbitant rate.
- become a professor
The ones I meet who aren’t doing one of these, and is no longer fully employed, are having a rough time finding a gig. (I’ve interviewed several desperate CSO-level planners for our open director level roles. Very sad to see my future.)
lots of great stories all success. Most success stories are from folks joining publishers and applying skills to content creation or folks joining early start-ups and helping shape vision and purpose. if you’ve made a craft out of ingenuity of thought you can succeed most anywhere. if you’ve perfect the art of the process and the craft of box filling, all that awaits outside the traditional is nightmares.
Chicago no, but here are some NYC worth considering that may have offices: SY, Prophet, Fahrenheit 212, IDEO, Red Scout, Fjord. Check to make sure they’re stable
People who refer to themselves as “legacy planners”
“Strategist” who argues facts = a creative
Consultancy for sure or innovation firms. But, you’ll need to hustle for each project which is a change from the agency side. Think jet ski versus cruise ship.
Jump to a marketing or biz development role to open you up to changing fields. And yes agree with Strategic Planner 1, consultancy seems like a decent option
CS1, why so cranky? And ageist?
Update yourself so that you’re more than a legacy and still relevant?
