A proper strategist? get with the times. Social brings in more revenue than any other platform now. If you don’t believe in social or its capabilities you are out of touch.
WHOA VP1. As someone who's done this in 20+ years in variety of big major companies, and live breath ALL digital channels you are way off. It's people like you that makes it that much harder to sell in digital compared to all other channels which have less metrics, less accuracy, reliant on "statistical" modeling. Stats and data don't lie. Social is often undervalued. But at same time agree that a strategist should be more general. But you'd be surprised at how many people or companies use social all wrong. Strategist are needed to help understand options and potential.
It’s amazing to me how many strategists/creatives/account folks don’t actually understand social, even though it’s something that nearly all of us use daily. Social strategists are absolutely imperative for this industry
Vice President 1, why so hostile?
I’ll bite. All strategists should know social. A social strategist is like a radio strategist or a tv strategist. It was a buzzword that worked before algorithms that neuter all reach and the heavy regulation to come. Further, social really very rarely effects any positive change for brands. It’s an echo chamber, no one sees any ads on it, and community management jobs are some of the most psychologically damaging and financially non imperative roles in the history of our industry. All of you out here still opining for social are the reason why every smart brand is cutting digital ad spend and nearly every holding company is scrambling. Social is a VERY small piece of the pie, unless you’re a dtc retail brand. One day your clients are going to catch up to the scheme
Instagram is where I see 90% of ads these days. See, as in notice and not ignore. As a society we're hard to reach, and everyone gets reached in different ways. Social, for millenials, is that way. And after that? Good luck finding high school kid watching TV or reading magazines.

How is the title “social media strategist” an oxymoron?
Because the term Social Media Strategist is an oxymoron. For a proper strategist, I’d agree with the 65-75 range.
When I was in NYC at that level of experience I was making about 50k BUT I felt like I screwed myself over earlier on in my career by not negotiating so your mileage may vary.
Maybe 65-75?
What do you do besides social?
Note: have worked in more PR and creative leaning roles. I’ve noticed this title also is sometimes related to paid social media buying which is probably a whole other thing.
