I’ve been asked my salary expectations in multiple interviews. I always aim extremely high “due to my experience and the skills I will bring to the team I would feel comfortable at a rate of xyz” and in the event they explain their pay rate is significantly lower I have straight up said “I appreciate the offer and completely understand however that is not a motivating number for me” always appreciative and polite and on every occasion I’ve done this I’ve received a significantly higher offer after the interviewer discussed with HR
I usually ask the recruiter for the salary range during the phone screen before the interview.
I have encountered salary negotiations many times during interviews. I suggestion is to always do your home work by researching the specific job base salary. There are many websites that can help you do this, I personally prefer salary.com as they seem to be more accurate. Avoid giving a specific number instead provide them with a salary range.

In my area at least it seems wages are way off. For example it tells me 30/hr average when it’s more like 45/hr for a hospital staff nurse. I’ve found most hospitals don’t negotiate on $/hr but will on benefits and sign on bonus. Most places seems to say you’ve been a nurse x amount of years you’re at this step and this is the pay. I’m fairly new so maybe some areas you can have better luck negotiating pay but the big systems seem to pay what they pay.
You only discuss it when you receive an offer
The recruiter that reached out to me a few days ago emailed specifically to ask me if I would be willing to lower my salary expectations before they ‘proceeded’ with scheduling an interview. I’m finding that many job postings do not include salaries which would be helpful so that I know which ones to bypass.
I work in recruitment for a healthcare business, and our standard rule is to include a salary banding on the advert, discuss it at a pre screen stage before interview and then again at job offer stage.
I’m interested in this info too.
Salary is usually not discussed during an interview , they usually don’t know the salary and say HR will contact you with an offer

You only negotiate salary once you have an offer in hand
I'm really here to take notes because I've been in this industry for a 7-year run and had been thinking about leaving or staying and negotiating my salary.
The person you are interviewing with will know nothing about your starting salary. HR makes those determinations. I stopped by HR to talk with them after my interview. I did ask about other things too like benefits, insurances, and etc to make it seem like it wasn’t just about pay. But they will tell you what your starting pay is if you were to be hired. It doesn’t make you look bad. I got called the next week and got the job.
I would do research for the salary range so that you have a ball park figure. That why I wouldn’t waste each other time with several rounds of interviews for both parties to be disappointed because of the lack of transparency of salary. I personally ask about it during the initial interview but only after all points are hit by the recruiter as that gives me some more insight about the company.
I research beforehand and have both a target and range in mind. I usually ask for a range at the end of an interview or phone screen. If they ask for my pay expectations then I aim very high, because they will most likely offer lower. I don’t negotiate until an offer has been made.
All the interviews I've been on, start out with, "The job pays this amount." When I negotiate a higher salary, they don't give me offer. I never can figure it out.
Unless you're asked or being offered one, I don't think you can negotiate your salary during the interview.
Like any other negotiation, don’t be first to mention a number or range.
