Salary question— a recruiter reached out with an opportunity and during our initial convo shared the base pay. I let her know of my desired range (which was higher) and she followed up saying the company was pretty set on their original base pay but did I still want to continue the process. I said that we could move forward as I was interested in learning more etc. I’m now in final stages. Is it reasonable to try negotiate higher? Or will they assume I’m already on board w original offer?

I wouldn’t think of the number they gave you as an offer but more as a budget - which is usually pretty set per role.

Think of it like buying a house or a car. You have a sense of what you want to spend. If you find something stellar you’d probably be willing to go overbudget but not by a huge amount

If the recruiter is a straight shooter and you’re a stellar candidate you can probably wiggle 5% maybe maybe maybe 10%

But if the top of their range is too far below your bottom, it’s probably fair to assume that you won’t be able to meet in the middle.

As someone who is involved in the recruiting process for my agency - it would also be very frustrating for me to hear at the end of the process that you now want to negotiate after continuing in the process when you had all the info upfront.

We work on salary bands to ensure fair and equitable pay. So when our recruiter tells a candidate a number, that’s the number for base salary. Full stop.

There may be room for you to ask about a sign-on bonus or other variable compensation (that would be my recommendation). Otherwise it creates the sense that you didn’t continue in the process in good faith and that’s bad juju.

Great perspective, thanks!

I did this to another company & the recruiter hated me for this when I tried to negotiate the base pay. They were saying how they were very clear upfront about the salary yadda yadda. YMMV, but I would say still try to negotiate for more.

I had a similar experience. Recruiter reaches out, tells me about an open role and shares the salary range. I tell her I’m open to hearing more but I’m already at the top of the range. I interview with multiple people then I’m told they’d like to proceed with an offer and again ask my salary expectations. I repeated that I’m already at the max and I’ll consider accepting if they can increase the salary by 10-15%. Yes, the recruiter seemed unhappy, but she said she’d see what she can do. Offer comes in, they gave me the 10% increase. I also negotiated for an additional week of PTO and got it.

I was willing to hear them say no to my requests but I’m glad I negotiated.

I just had the initial call with HR. I was told that Senior Analysts start at 56k and Business Operations Specialists start at 67k. Hi fishes,

got the offer from
BNY Mellon | Pershing BNY Mellon Corporation Pune, India.

The offer letter mentions only fixed pay. HR told me that PF (employer), gratuity, and bonus (8%) are over and above fixed pay. But there is no mention of a bonus anywhere on offer. is this correct or am I getting tricked by HR? Help from current and ex BNYs is much appreciated.

I know how to google :) but would love this groups view: how did you think about engagement ring cost? I know the old “x months salary” framing but would just benefit from hearing what others did. For context, my tc is about 250k. Partner and I don’t have a ton of $ though due to big focus on paying down loans till last year. So, doing ok but not swimming in disposable cash.

Just heard back from a company I applied to (no offer, just let me know about range) and their pay for a creative project manager is $48k. That's a joke. But the company is amazing and I would love to be a part of their team because of the work that comes out of it. Any ideas on how I can negotiate? Or if I can negotiate at all??
