Salary vs Hourly - any other hourly EA’s here? I have an interview with T-Mobile next week and their EA’s are hourly. I’m currently hourly now, and Overtime is not permitted. I hate having to clock in and out because I am working regardless. As soon as I clock out is when everyone calls me to do something. Would it be possible to negotiate being salary instead of hourly?

I think the EA role in general is hourly as a labor law. It’s an OT eligible role

like

I'm hourly and actually prefer it over salary solely because I am allowed overtime. I don't work for free 🤷‍♀️

Also, in the US, hourly vs salary is job duty dependant, so you might not be able to negotiate that. I would, however, make sure you get overtime at a bare minimum.

like

Oof. That is a game changer. Most times we need the overtime to get our jobs done, but at least you have the policy to back you up for not doing late days or being available after hours.

Every role I’ve held with larger companies has been hourly by technicality but classified as salary non exempt which means I am paid a salary but I can still claim overtime. I wouldn’t worry about this too much in our job we works tons of extra hours and being able to claim overtime is a blessing

like

I say negotiate EVERYTHING.

Everything.

like

Definitely!

Hourly also means if you have to travel for work, you get paid for every hour your traveling which adds up to tons overtime for long flight trips. The hourly classification is a blessing in my opinion not a curse.

like

I wish travel time was apart of my situation.

Don’t not answer any calls after you clock out! I used to be hourly and I simply would walk out after clocking out even if the phone was ringing. I am salary now but I do get paid OT on busy season. I like being paid salary.

I'm an hourly as well. At first I was not happy about it but it is turning out to be better for me in the long run.

When I was hired, it was journey and has been hourly for years. I was told that is the structure of the position and can’t be changed. If someone asks for food something overtime, I just let my manager know

like

*and work , not food

I think I’m just frustrated with my current employer because they don’t allow overtime. I can see the benefit of hourly if overtime is a possibility, especially those times working longer is needed.

like

So do you work overtime and just not get paid for it? If so, you could make the argument that your state law supports you to be classified as an hourly employee (if it does). For example, in maryland the reason many admins are non exempt is because unless their “primary duty is the performance of office or non-manual work directly related to the management or general business operations of the employer, and whose primary duty includes the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance” they cannot be classified as exempt. I’ve asked for clarification on what this “matters of significance” applies too but have not received a response from the state. However, my former company’s HR stated this meant significant financial decisions which in larger corps admins are generally not responsible for and there is an approval structure setup which requires these to go up the ladder for approval. If your company is also setup like this and your state also has a law like this, you could use this as your argument.

Omg yes and same exact struggles. And I work for an officer of the company so according to the laws here I can be exempt, just no one wants to change it. It’s one of those battles I don’t have the energy for, especially when I won’t be here much longer.

I’m hourly non exempt. I request comp time vs overtime bc I’d rather get off early and my boss is fine with that. I would not be working later otherwise. It can wait until the next day!

My remit quadrupled+ in a recent re-org with no increase in pay/promotion, my new director is new to the company and was zero help, and I was passed over for recent promotion during the comp cycle. The new director essentially began shutting me down any time I ask for clarity in my career progression. Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?

I applied for a job and 3 weeks later I get an email saying I was confirmed next week for an interview at x time with the director of x. Having had no communication with the company prior to this email, I was contemplating a response, until I received another email 30 minutes later saying they set the first email in error and weren't moving forward with my application.

How do I respond to this? Will asking the reason why they're not considering my app hurt my future chances at this company?

Applied for a role internally and feedback from 1st round interview was positive. However, I was told there’s strong external competition who have more experience in the field and likely to get the job. Hiring manager told me to consider a different open role in the team where I’d be a much better fit. The other role isn’t exactly what I was hoping for but could be a foot in the door. Has anyone had similar experiences? I don’t know whether to abandon this completely or remain persistent. Thx!

I’m having a lot of trouble getting used to how unstructured the startup is. Is this just the general startup environment? If you experienced this before, how did you deal with It?
