I started at the bottom making 25k base cold calling shit accounts (small, tiny, rural places that didn't give a crap about technology). With commission + overtime the first year I made 48k, 2nd year I made 95k, 3rd year I made 130k. I left that job bc there was writing on the wall that my pay was basically going to be cut in half the following year due to numerous variables (supply chain constraints a big issue) and got hired at VMware for 118k + OTE which I'm starting to think I probably could have gotten more like 130-150k as my base. My goal is slightly inflated for my territory so I think realistically the most I could make this year would be $170k. For me, I can't even fathom making 200k+ I mean of course it would be nice but I care about three things: 1. Paying my bills 2. Investing and 3. Enjoying my life now in my 30s, 40s instead of only caring about work and waiting until retirement to enjoy life.
I know more than a few people in sales for 10+ years making 250k-$1m and almost all of them are workaholics. Most people in sales are. Honestly if you stay in sales, hit your number, and woo your customers, you will pretty much always be rewarded with bigger & better accounts. The reason my salary grew so substantially in my first 3 years is because I just waited for people to quit and worked alottttt.
With recent Broadcom announcement I'm thinking of looking elsewhere, but did a quick search and realized I'm getting paid pretty well comparatively to other companies so will probably keep my eyes open but ride out my salary and commission for a few months.
Incredibly insightful- thank you
Wait till you discover the progression of pharmaceutical sales…those people literally get paid millions of dollars in commission to host Pharma conferences in Hawaii.
