“If you can’t guarantee hours, I can’t guarantee availability.” If that’s the case I may take on other projects and let them know that if something comes in from them I’ll get to it when I can but won’t be right away since I’m balancing with other projects. If they want you to be on call they need to pay for it. (Then next time have the discussion up front letting them know that to be on call you’ll bill 4 hrs minimum… or better yet, get on a day/week rate)

How many billable hours do people in prosecution tend to average each month? I’ve gone through waves of feeling like my billable hours requirement is reasonable to feeling like I’m drowning and can’t possibly do it for that long.

First year here as a general staff accountant. Midsize. Been asking scheduling for work but only managed to get 10 hours of billable work last week doing a couple 1040s... I also ask around yet everyone says they’re fine. It’s still considered busy season here since I’m at midsize and it feels wrong not hitting atleast 40 billable hours. It would suck if I got laid off cause of it. 🥴

Are any other paralegals struggling with billable hour requirements? I have 5 years of experience in corporate transactions, M&A, and real estate work, and have never had billable hour requirements. How much do in-house attorneys actually work? I know there’s no billable req. and I always thought they were chilling with a cush 9-5/9-3 gig, no nights no weekends. But now I’m not so sure it’s so rainbows and butterflies. Looking at pre-IPO start ups and newly IPOd companies non-FAANG but in tech. My main desire is WLB. Should I try a boutique with scaled down billable hours or in-house with no billable hours? Help!

Let’s say you get sick for one day during busy season, and you end up making up the time later in the week and weekend reaching the minimum 60 hour billable goal. Would you take PTO for the day you missed. Why or why not? Assume this is a company that does not have unlimited PTO.

Why are the expectations on billable hours so extreme on lawyers? Consulting, accounting and other comparable jobs, apart from investment bankers, are way below lawyers. And it’s not that lawyers won’t make enough money if they work less - reduce hours by 10% and you’d still be making fortunes as a partner and a small fortune as an associate.

I work small (tiny) law. I make mid-100s, so not great salary, but my firm is so laid back. If I bill 1000 hours, that's fine (we were a remote firm before COVID made it cool). Compared to all my peers getting crushed under 1800+ billable requirements, I've got severe imposter's syndrome. Did I do something right or have I set myself up for failure by avoiding the pressure cooker? (I was at a firm for 2 years that was 1800+.) Curious as to thoughts/experiences.
