Same day cancellations? I’ve been freelancing at agency in a mostly full time capacity for a few months. Working remotely, billing hourly. They are very particular about billable time and nitpick downtime. The budget has been cut and hour reduced. I requested a schedule so we can all plan accordingly. Now I “show up” in the morning and am told there is no work. I would normally bill for 4 hours but they insist they don’t guarantee hours. I don’t even know how to respond anymore. Suggestions?

Why are the expectations on billable hours so extreme on lawyers? Consulting, accounting and other comparable jobs, apart from investment bankers, are way below lawyers. And it’s not that lawyers won’t make enough money if they work less - reduce hours by 10% and you’d still be making fortunes as a partner and a small fortune as an associate.

I work small (tiny) law. I make mid-100s, so not great salary, but my firm is so laid back. If I bill 1000 hours, that's fine (we were a remote firm before COVID made it cool). Compared to all my peers getting crushed under 1800+ billable requirements, I've got severe imposter's syndrome. Did I do something right or have I set myself up for failure by avoiding the pressure cooker? (I was at a firm for 2 years that was 1800+.) Curious as to thoughts/experiences.

I just accepted an offer at another big4 and I feel so blessed to be making $130k in LOCL as a 23 year old with less than 1.25 YOE. And I find it funny that I'm gonna be "senior" consultant/associate at my age and YOE.
