Sanity check - between pumping and feeding our 10 week old, I’m up 3-5 times a night (pump bc baby has hard time latching) so I’m extremely sleep deprived. I’d like to quit pumping at night and switch to formula if needed and agree fed is best but I’m biologically crazy and determined to EBF. Even after turning off the night pump alarms I keep waking up somehow to pump. How can I get over this or will it get easier?

Is baby also up 3-5x a night? Feels like at a minimum you could scale back. When baby wakes naturally, feed, then pump, then back to bed. DO NOTHING if baby is sleeping!

Why not use formula some of the time as a compromise/starting point? I think you should just switch to formula, you need to sleep to recover, function and enjoy time with your baby - but I understand if you want to EBF. This internet stranger gives you permission to do what will make you more well rested and happy! Good luck!

So for me, my supply regulated at 12 weeks in a way that I could get 6 hrs of sleep at a stretch. There are some good resources at pump momma pump, exclusive breast pumping and bemybreastfriend. The initial 12 weeks were a haze and I remember getting up every 2-3 hrs to pump… after 12 weeks it got massively better…

smart

Adding solidarity 18 months of pumping for my first who wouldn’t latch and another 20 for my second who was a preemie and also didn’t want to latch. It gets easier. Beginning is the hardest!!

Pump after baby eats, do not wake up just to pump.

I EP’d for my first due to zero latch, and by 10 weeks I pumped around 10pm, once during the night, and at 6am.

You kind of have to tough it out for a few months, but if you want to do formula, do formula. Talk to your doc, there are some books. It gets better, but the first several months can be really hard. Think of it as the hardest job you will have to do, IMO.

Give yourself a few more weeks. Also, book a lactation appointment so they can work on latch issues. If they don’t help, book another one. I saw 3 lactation specialists after I left the hospital (2 while in the hospital). Your supply will also regulate if baby sleeps longer. I try to pump before bed so I can get a longer stretch in case baby does sleep. I EBF and pump 1-2 times per day lately. I was on the verge of quitting, I cried and cried and thought it would be better for my mental health but I’m so glad I didn’t. Those early days are very tough. It’s easy to want to quit when you’re sleep deprived and it feels like it’s the only thing you can control. If you still have your heart set on EBF, you can do it! You’re not crazy, you want to do what you think is best for your baby and that’s amazing. It will get easier I promise. I also recommend seeing an ENT to have your baby evaluated for a tongue tie and lip tie. I highly recommend that to rule out for latch issues. Some are not easy to see and lactation and pediatricians can miss it. If you are pumping a lot, it might help to get multiple parts so you’re not always cleaning, or getting a hands free pump. They may be a bit expensive but they will give you your life back if you feel like you’re always connected to a pump. If you want to quit pumping at night, when you wake up just pump to relieve the pressure, don’t empty. Over time your body will regulate to not produce so much milk during this time. Good luck mama 😊

If it really matters to you (not because it’s best, because I truly believe either is 100% fine) then try to remember that this is a season. I’m nursing my second and both my kids have woken every 3 hours until they were one and we could bump up solids and milk. It’s rough. I’m so tired some days it seems hard to function. But I consistently think through the trade offs (largely emotional) and talk to my husband and try to decide what the best is for me right now. I feel insanely close with my first because of so many middle of the night sessions with just the two of us that I want to do it with my second. It doesn’t always have to be logical, how it makes you feel is just as important.

Had a second baby almost a year ago now and just can’t get back into work mode. I used to be a workaholic and now can’t find any motivation in my current job. Most of it is probably sleep deprivation and feeling like I don’t have any time to myself anymore, plus burnout. Anyone go through this after having kids? How long did it last? I don’t have the option of simply quitting, but contemplating switching to a true 9-5, no-stress job, possibly out of law, while they’re young. But that’s scary.

Naive question: How many yearly billable hours are reasonable for a good balance of work and home. I have a young child and don't want to miss out on important moments. I had one firm state that their yearly quota is 1900 hours and I don't have a frame of reference as to whether this is reasonable or if it means 12 hour days. I am coming from public service so billables are 100% new to me. Any insight is appreciated.
