At what age did you sell your first project?
Do it. Finding qualified people who are capable and have the desire to do a job is difficult. I'd much rather have it fall into my lap.
Agreed. Nothing to lose, much to gain.
Yes - do it! Most probably he will only be happy to have someone he knows (only if a bit) have the job rather than a person he doesn’t know at all. Worst case, he doesn’t respond because he has many others reaching out but nothing to lose in this worst case scenario too.

A shallow connection is better than no connection at all, for sure! He may be surprised, but also glad, that you reached out regarding the position. Since it's not a close relationship, you won't really lose anything if it doesn't work out.. but if it does work out, it sounds like it could be a great thing!
That shallow connection might work in you favor, to be completely honest. It's not rude at all. Just don't get too casual (allow him to speak casually to you first) and remember you're applying for a job at his company.
I don't think it is shallow or bad at all. If I were that person I would be flattered that you reached out to me about the role. I say def go for it.
Update: Messaged him this morning. Thank you for the advice!
