By being good at their job. Two years is on the early end for EM designation, but not unheard of (3-4 years is more common). All BAs who I've seen become EMs have exceptional executive presence and communication skills, and they're only designated once the firm has seen them work successfully with clients in the EM role for a couple studies. All of McK is very young, so the age itself doesn't really matter; it's how you carry yourself.

I don’t work at McKinsey but on track to make M at my firm by 25. I’ve been leading a team of 3 analysts and leading C suite conversations for the past 8 months. I’ve achieved this by teaching myself a lot about a particular industry (health insurance) and functional area (data science). This was a work in progress starting freshman year of college. So I think it comes down to that at this point, I’m truly an SME in this space so C suite folks want to hear what I’m saying

Nice bro/bra - sounds like you’re a badass

I mean there’s a reason they’re at McKinsey. Beyond that they’re a top performer at McKinsey. They’re not your average Joe.

like

Because they are a remarkably smart and talented 24 year old. They exist. We hire some of them every year. They are insane - razor sharp, great with their teams, and incredible executive presence. And usually super nice. I’m old, started in consulting at 30, and was in no way this person when I was 24. I was clueless.

McK gives you the title but not the comp, and you only lead very small teams. Not a comparable role to real manager.

I think the point is more about EM designation being separate from a career step or comp grade.

I have noticed some people have that way of communication

It all comes down to connections they make with the clients , partners and businesses they bring in to the firm .

Same argument goes for “how could those 24-year old VC associates evaluate the C-suites after spending 2 years at IB/MBB?”

How was that fyre festival guy able to do what he did? I'm guessing the difference between the two is probably only a matter of degree.

Yeah some of these “startups” that manage to get $50MM out of thin air is crazy to me.

Maybe you should ask them?

Unintentional self own.... but yeah lose the fear of reaching out to people. It’ll help tremendously in life. Best case you gain a connection + answers that drive better future performance. Worst case they don’t respond

So I assume they are just analytics junkies and have the partners sprinkle in their deep insight during final readouts?

Disagree with M1 that BA-EMs are better EMs than. Asc-EMs. I’m sure you have your anecdotes and I have mine, but even saying BA-EMs stay longer or progress faster is misleading bc they only know the McK way of working.

Bain used to make 6 year partners out of undergrad, not that many years ago.

Is this crazy career progression only a US thing or does it also exist in Europe?

Just US

Most of these consulting jobs you really don’t do much. It’s kind of like being a manager at McDonald’s. 2 years is probably enough if you can learn that fast.

like

There's a double idiocy: thinking McDonalds managers don't do much and thinking that the role of manager at a McDonalds is the equivalent of the role of a manger in a consulting firm simply because they share a title

like

They have confidence, intelligence, and charisma. That stuff isn’t restricted to being older.

like

Smartest person I've ever met was 23 when we first got introduced. His employer offered me a job and I took it because I wanted to work with him and learn from him. Some people are just exceptional.

like

Maybe they’re older than 24, have a master’s degree or multiple bachelors degree and a top performer

Nope, no masters
