OW definitely a cut above big 4, certainly in financial services. And I say that having been a client of both in a prior role. It’s why I joined OW and would never work for big 4. Calibre of staff much higher. As are fees (so presumably better paid too!)
Jesus. Ignorant and proud? That’s a deadly combo.
Also keep in mind that Deloitte and other Big 4 firms are, quite simply, bigger than firms like OW. I think we have around 5,000 employees, compared to Deloitte’s 280,000. So while people may not have heard of OW as much as Deloitte, the type of work that we do is often much more interesting.
OW, ATK, LEK are much closer to MBB in terms of pay, career progression, where they recruit, types of projects they do, and ratio of Partners to consultants than B4.
Big 4 ratings incorporate breadth of services. LEK/OW are more targeted. But where they are strong they are much stronger than big 4. Parthenon/S& are exceptions to big 4 and comparable to tier 2.
Yeah idk what SA1 is talking about but senior associates make around $200 all in at S&. Managers make a lot more.
Vault is probably more from undergrad recruiting perspective than client perspective. We're more expensive than big 4, but I think less expensive than MBB, I guess that's what makes us tier 2.
The only thing that matters to me in terms of tier is the pay. Big4 non-partner pay is generally below commonly accepted T1/T2 firms.
I wonder how big 4 partner pay works out vs competitors given the big 4 pension. I'm sure it is lower but that pension is very enticing.

Where would folks put ZS, Alix and A&M vs Big4?
Despite me asking this question I would not worry about tiers. Big4 are stronger than tier 1 firms in certain spaces (e.g. analytics) and much weaker in others (strategy). I'd try to find the right fit based on what you are interested in.
For ZS, it’ll be the most respected name in pharma. The depth of relationship and breadth of services in life sciences far exceeds any big 4
Do you think the rankings are impacted by whether the firm is publicly traded or a private partnership? How much of their info is readily available to the public?
Admittedly biased, but I feel like ZS belongs in that same conversation. Small, specialized, and apex firm in its core industry. Plus, 2nd year MBA tuition reimbursement and the appeal of not traveling also attracts some of the folks who were competitive for MBB and T2 firms mentioned.
