How do you teach your kids (esp boys) to find the balance between avoiding fights and defending themselves?

I've sort of focused on a "three shove rule" for my 5 year old. If someone pushes you once, you tell them to stop. They do it again, tell them to stop.

The third time, fight back as hard as you can.

I realize it's not ideal but I think it's a way for me to teach him restraint as well as make sure that he doesn't get bullied.

Feeling depressed and inadequate after being rejected from the final round interview at the 6th tech company I interviewed for the past year. A lot of my peers have been moving there successfully.
