Producers can do anything. Including starting own business. Put your producer skills to the test in something you are passionate about. We are creators of anything these days.
Assembling teams is the role of most C-Suite members. Producers manage people, CEOs do the same. This should be an easy jump once you find the right employer.
I often joke that I’ll be a wedding planner one day 😆
Ha! Same
I have been down this road a few times over my long career but find that nothing pays remotely comparable to advertising. Still here.
Same!
I’m at a tech startup and it’s.... too back stabby so I’m thinking about real estate until I think of something else. also looking for ideas....
Oh man. Feeling this too. I'm so tired of the assholes that seem to flourish in advertising.
Maybe cost consulting?
PM in another industry is a pretty natural transition I think
How about being a contractor? Negotiating skills, liaison between teams, budgets and timelines etc
I’ve thought about it. You have to start at the bottom pretty much, a lot of places require basic engineering backgrounds or drafting knowledge. You’re bidding those skills often so it makes sense you’d need to understand what you’re bidding.
Maybe construction. They need people to manage the workers.
This thread is my life right now. I’ve been spending the last few weeks drilling down on all the skills I use as a producer and figuring out how to showcase them to employers outside of production. Right now I’m thinking marketing for a brand but out of production and use my knowledge of how to create content because everyone needs video but no one knows how to get it done effectively.
EP 4 If you want an extra pair of eyes or to bounce ideas around I can peek at your CV. At your level you can bring value to a ton of places. I also can’t say this enough. IPG/WPP etc are just not the only places for a producer. I haven’t had an agency gig in while, I’ve been in finance, PR, places I didn’t expect made videos.
Following.
Don’t really care about the pay aspect just want something else.
Yeah, PM would be something comparable. Pays mores too. But depending on the industry, it might be more or less stressful than producing. If you don’t care about the money then go to an admin role.
Great question! I've been thinking about this a lot myself - what other job titles should I be looking at if I wanted to go client side?
General contractor/builder/developer
Yes general contractor/builder/developer
Depends what you like! Post is production without the client in your face and you deal with your counterpart producers often, less than with Account teams who don’t speak your language. What about Biz Affairs? If you like the contractual and budget managing aspects, it’s perfect, and you deal with producers, (sane), Legal, (buttoned up), and Finance, (nicest people in my opinion). Anything in Traffic/Legal/Clearances, in ad agency or broadcast will be similar. Except for networks, many BM’s are JD’s, but still there are opportunities.
Been thinking about this too. Thought about something in tech, project management or operations role. Right now am looking into starting my own business. Well mostly a side project to see if it will turn to something?
Ah! I have been feeling the same as well, primarily concerned with work-life balance. Nice to know I’m not alone, plus I have been super hard on myself for feeling so burnt out. But I suppose it’s the sacrifice for higher pay / less personal life. Been working more than surgeon hours and yet I’m not saving lives or getting that salary. Wondering what other options there might be myself, can’t provide much insight.
