Totally agree with above posts. My Chinese name is extremely difficult to pronounce and my Econ professor happened to call me “Sexy” (my fist name looks alike this word and is a combination of characters which I suppose Americans don’t usually know how to make that sound)in front of the entire class back in college. I NEVER share my real name thereafter:)

A lot of Asians with non-American names give themselves American nicknames so it’s easier for others to pronounce or remember. I would just ask him what he prefers to be sure. If you want to play it safe and don’t want to ask, I’d just call him John. Some people might find being called their Chinese name a little awkward unless you’re addressing them in Chinese. It just really depends on the person.

Most native Chinese people I’ve met in America prefer their American names (unless you speak Mandarin)

“What do you prefer to be called?”

...that if it were me I’d love to be called my real name. But I’m white so I can’t trust that instinct. Is it nice to call him Sheng or patronizing?

As SC1 pointed out, it’s common practice for Asians to choose American nicknames. Call him John.

E1 ohh my 😲🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ Agree with all the comments above! Also it’ll be himself in this particular case

Am Chinese, call him John. He chose it for a reason and I would rather be called that name that I chose than be forever called by a mispronounced name despite attempts at correction. Uh, and I don't mean that to come off as rude, names just work differently here, yknow?

Also is it themself or themselves? Idk

Agree with above, he prob informed you of his legal name because you may see that name on some paperwork or something in the course of your dealings. Won’t be a surprise if he’s just upfront from start. Not Asian but I go by my middle name so people get confused sometimes if I don’t disclose

I’m conflicted — as an Asian Jon/John, there are too damn many of us with Biblical names and we all end up needing to go by full names as a result to avoid confusion so I’d love a more unique name to go by. But you should probably just ask which he prefers.

A1 has the right answer!

Yeah, it’s annoying when you just don’t call him John and then want the whole backstory as to why. That’s more annoying than anything. You won’t learn anything new except that some Americans are intolerant and racist, still. Just stop being curious and call him John.

I graduated in May 2016, then worked at a firm for 1.5 years. Now, I've been at my current big 4 consulting gig for 1.5 years. If I leave now, does that look like job hopping on my resume??

Left Deloitte for greener pastures about 3 years ago. When I joined another company after my departure, the partner from the project which fed into my decision me to leave D was stalking my LinkedIn profile. Now that I’m at McK he is still stalking my LinkedIn profile. Again, this person’s behavior played a significant role in my decision to depart D. Should I reach out to him in a friendly way to probe/see what he wants? is his behavior strange? He didn’t seem to care about me when I was @ D.

What was it about the Deloitte layoffs that angered people? I.e "How it was handled" I know it sucks, but people seem particularly pissed.
