Say your last day with the firm is in a week and your team tells you that you have to work late this week to meet a deadline. Do you work the overtime or not?

Absolutely not. Not one single person will ever remember you as “the guy who worked overtime in his last week”. Say you have other commitments and log off

It’s popping over in Consulting. The growth we are seeing is exciting especially for those who are ambitious and contributing to our growth centers.

You need to make sure you have a strong reference from your firm. You will need it when applying for future jobs. Do you know who will give you a strong reference years into the future? That is your top priority right now. Play the long game.

I thought your best friends wedding was on Wednesday next week? Pretty sure you said it was.

likefunnysmart

I'll be alright Partner, I likely make more than you as an IB associate, but thanks for your concern.

I hang out in the accounting bowl because it reminds me of what a great decision it was to pursue an MBA and GTFO out of public with sad and pathetic leadership like you.

You've shown your true colors, and it sure didn't take a lot, feel terrible for anyone that has to work with you.

like

Only if you think you might boomerang. Otherwise, hell no

likesmart

Probably not. Depends on if I want to come back to the firm in the future though

like

You need to act professionally, since your reputation is your most important asset. The guy who worked late during his last week? That’s what you want people to say about you, not the opposite.

funnylike

No one will remember. I say this as someone who made this mistake early in his career. There are no gold stars for this stuff.

like

Hell no! I remember my dumb ass stayed late on even my last day of work to try to wrap up a project to where I had to come back the next day to turn in my computer because they had shut down. No one asked me to do this but I don’t even think that a team should even suggest that you work late after your two weeks notice.

like

Yeah just say you can’t stay late as you need to prepare for your new role.

like

No 🥰

like

Presumably you have already given your notice? Probably not but I think it depends on your relationship ship with your team. I recently left EY and feel like I worked really hard during my notice period to get things in a good place and transitioned to others. I was really close with my team and also a SM so many aspects of my role were not handled by anyone else on the team. I had to put in effort to bring a new SM up to speed. If you’re just a staff and someone else can easily step in then I probably wouldn’t work too hard. Do what you can during 9-5, the rest the team can figure out.

like

I probably would for my team, but most people don’t work late after giving their notice. Unless your group is extremely short staffed, your staff role should be relatively easy to fill. For those that do put in the extra effort, I can say it has left a very positive impression on their co-workers. It’s a small world and that effort will likely be remembered.

likefunny

If you like them, ok. I did for 2 people that were in rough spots and had also spent time teaching and showing me stuff, so I didn’t mind during my notice period.

And burning bridges is a very stupid term.

I’ve seen people do both. The ones that are ok cutting out at 5 even if it means their team gets crushed are the ones I’m glad to see go.

Your firm doesn’t care one way or the other. But if you’re ok screwing over your team, then….

like

I agree, it’s a choice not an obligation. And for me the choice would depend on the circumstances. There’s a bare minimum you should do (otherwise take PTO or a couple week gap). But there might be reasons to more than the minimum is all I’m saying.

Two weeks notice is a courtesy. Your employment is at will, meaning you can leave anytime and conversely, they can fire you anytime.

Thought experiment: if you were laid off, would your firm pay you a little extra or give you more time if you asked nicely?

Be professional, but don't get yourself crazy working overtime hours.

likesmarthelpful

Does overtime mean paid more? If not no. Unless you like them personally and would not mind working with them again in the future if the opportunity arises. Also depends on how late.

like

It does not pay overtime. I’m leaning toward telling them no….

like

You work late to help the team out. Never burn bridges because you never know who you'll work with again on the other side.

like

I don’t want people on the other side to think of me as a sucker that is willing to work late, even when I’ve given notice.

I want to be the client that gives you the PBCs in the morning, answers the team’s questions throughout the day, then heads out at 5pm with a cheery wave and a suggestion that you guys leave too.

Or if you meant “the other side”, I’m still figuring that out. Pretty sure I’ve ended up in a Bad Place if I’m still working late after I’m dead.

like

Here’s my guess: you knew about the deadline beforehand, but said not your problem since you’re leaving and it’s someone else’s problem now. Yeah, you don’t have to work late, but it would be nice if you did.

likefunny

With all due respect, if you’re a staff or a senior- you’re replaceable. This is just business. Work 40 hours, transition your responsibilities, but it’s up to your soon to be former employer to manage staffing an engagement that requires overtime. Anyone trying to justify some other answer has unrealistic expectations about work.

like

This is bananas. Of course not.

To the people referencing “burning bridges” there is a narrow set of circumstances I can possibly imagine this souring a relationship. The people who would hold this over you are probably very toxic and it’s unlikely you’ll really want to maintain the relationship anyways.

like

You don't want to be exhausted when you start a new job. You will already have a ton to do as part of your exit process. I would not.

like

Nope. Sounds like you made a good choice to leave.

Whew this group is a relief to find. No one at my job knows I have ADHD, and I only have one other friend with it. I manage a team of people and the stress of checking, double checking, and triple-checking everything to make sure I'm not forgetting anything or behind on anything is insane. I've kind of got the hang of keeping focus during work hours, but I'm just constantly on edge that someone will notice or I'll start falling behind.
