Saying this is sacrilege, but doesn't it annoy you when veterans at work can't stop rambling on about the military way of life?

I'm like, "dude just make these slides prettier so we can all go home".

A lot of veterans face discrimination in the workplace. Talking about it helps normalize tolerance and acceptance of people with military backgrounds.

likehelpful

It also helps people understand each other.

At the age of 21 most people are in college partying / studying, but 21 year olds in the army are serving tours in Afghanistan.

Maybe you can try being a bit more open to their inputs and experiences? Your language kinda sounds like you brush them off immediately.

What vets are you hiring?

Generally they show up and work. You know they’re a vet if you look at their LinkedIn or ask them.

Yeah...I am a vet and nobody at work hears about it. Most people don’t even know??

My grandfather was an anti-aircraft gunner in Europe during WW2. He and his platoon would roll anti-aircraft guns into a field, camouflage them, and wait. For days. Every so often he’d hear planes in the distance. Germans. Showtime. Let’s hope they don’t know about our position, otherwise we’re toast. The concept of a sneak attack means no support nearby.

He didn’t talk much about it, but he did shoot down planes, and those pilots died. His mother was a German immigrant to the US, so it was all very conflicting to take his first trip to her homeland to kill them. I wish he was still around so I could hear his stories.

My uncle signed up for the Army in 1965. He volunteered to go to Vietnam. He genuinely believed in the premise behind the war, and that communism needed to be met head on. He would set land mines and come back the next day to see which ones tripped. His work eventually led to the discovery of just how extensive the underground tunneling systems were. One day he was checking the mines and one exploded. I wish he were still here. Wish I would have met him.

I joined the military six days after 9/11. Dropped out of college and was in boot camp a month later. I joined because of my uncle and grandfather. They would have been proud. I also have descendants that served in the Revolutionary War, and fought for the Union in the Civil War. It’s an oral history that has been passed down through generations.

Doesn’t sound like you’re the type of person I would share my own personal experiences with. You’re just another ungrateful civy with no clue what any of that stuff I just said means, and what those lives lost bought you. Good riddance.

KPMG not the world, just this country. Your snark isn’t going to make me any less proud of that.

I would be honored to hear their boring stories. 🤦‍♀️

It is not sacrilege but it is more of WYKYK and you show you don’t know.

Never been exposed to this situation (veterans rambling about the military way of life)

I worked with veterans and they literally never brought it up. Ever. Not once unless we asked about it.

Nah we good. Get the mfking slides we out

I love working with vets- they’re fantastic. Never worked with a bad vet at the firm. I love hearing their stories. They have a world of experience that I will never have; for that I’m grateful and have a lot to learn from them.

like

As a veteran I recognize there are veterans like this but they are rare and usually were the same vets that hated it in the military till they got out.

As a vet myself I choose to not talk about it unless someone wonders why I am 4 years older than my peers, in which case I just say what I did and answer any questions

like

EY 2, essentially what A1 said. Ppl view vets differently bc a lot of times they don’t relate to society when they get out. Schools and businesses recognize this and lump veterans in the minority group, which is good in some ways but not in so

like

I only met one like that, assuming others were just not obnoxious about it. But yeah, she constantly talked about what wouldn’t fly in the military (ie. how casual we were etc). Like, I get it but it got old after a while.

The irony of making this post all about you while failing to acknowledge your coworkers needs annoys me.

Military life is extremely structured. If you get outside of the processes, it can be difficult to adjust to.

I moved in with my friend of 10+ years in July. The apartment has a parking spot available for lease. Initially she was paying $200 a month for it but about three/four months in decided to stop. In late December our relationship soured and we’re not friends anymore. In January I complained to my landlord about something and he said we can use the space for free but if his son needs it he can take it back. Even though I don’t like her I told her and we have been alternating [Continued]
