I have learned that there is a strong difference between what you think think is reflective of over performing vs. what your superiors think is over performing. In many cases, we tend to go the extra mile (often sacrificing our personal time) because we consider that sacrifice to be over performing, but the unfortunate truth is that lots of times, people don’t care and don’t even see it as over performing. In reality, whether you offer help or not will make no difference in your performance evaluation in certain cases. My point is, before you set yourself up with what will be extra work not related to your direct scope gratuitously, take the time to think: “Is this going to be appreciated and recognized by others, or am I simply creating extra work for me with no associated benefit?” This is not a lazy cop out - I’ve been ranked as high performer for several years in a row, and believe I have truly made an impact to my projects. But in the end, you need to be judicious of when/where/how you’re spending your time. Seems like your dude isn’t necessarily appreciative of your offer, and is willing to dump stuff on you. Sending a “homework” list for an edit volunteer is a bit of an ass move.
Go the extra mile where it counts. Don’t throw pearls at pigs.
